First remove the nursery stake and check whether the tree stands upright while its root ball stays steady. Add temporary support only if the tree cannot stand on its own, its root ball shifts, or its size or exposed planting site creates a specific stability problem.
When should you stake a newly planted tree?
Staking is a temporary way to keep a tree upright while its roots establish; it is not a routine planting step. Support may help a bare-root tree, a tree with a small or undersized root ball, a top-heavy tree, or one planted in a windy, exposed location.
Start by removing the nursery stake, which may hold the trunk too tightly. Watch the tree as it moves naturally: if it stands upright and the root ball remains steady, do not add stakes. If the root ball shifts as the tree sways, it needs support while it establishes. Iowa State University Extension describes this root-ball movement check in its newly planted tree care guidance.
How to stake a tree that needs support
- Choose stakes that will hold in firm soil. Use sturdy wood or metal stakes, placed outside the planting hole or root ball. Do not drive them through the root area.
- Set the number and position to the site. One to three stakes may be appropriate, depending on the tree and its exposure. Iowa State recommends placing one stake upwind of prevailing winds. Oregon State describes a two-post method; these are situation-dependent approaches, not a universal stake count. See Iowa State’s tree-planting guidance and Oregon State’s guide to selecting, planting, and caring for a new tree.
- Attach the lower trunk with a broad, flexible tie. Canvas, rubber, or cotton T-shirt strips are examples recommended by Iowa State. Avoid rope, twine, or wire directly against the trunk: narrow or rigid materials can rub or constrict it.
- Leave room for natural movement. Adjust the ties so they stabilize the root ball without locking the trunk rigidly in place. The trunk should be able to sway.
- Inspect and reassess. Check ties regularly for rubbing, constriction, or damage, and check whether the root ball still moves as the tree settles in.
Match the support method to the tree
Nearby stakes and flexible ties can suit a smaller tree with a root ball that needs modest stabilization. Some larger balled-and-burlapped transplants may need guying or a system that anchors the root ball; that is a different method from tying a small tree to stakes beside it. Purdue Extension advises placing guying attachments below two-thirds of the tree’s height and allowing movement. Do not wrap thin wire directly around the trunk.

Staking cannot correct poor planting or poor root development. If the tree remains unstable, its root ball is damaged, or you cannot determine an appropriate support method, an on-site assessment by a qualified local arborist may be appropriate.
When to remove the stakes and ties
Remove all supports as soon as the tree can stand independently and its root ball stays anchored. Iowa State describes removal after one growing season as typical; Oregon State and Purdue advise removal within about a year. Treat those as practical timeframes, not a reason to leave support in place if it is no longer needed. Purdue Extension’s August 28, 2026 guidance also cautions that staking too high, too tightly, or for too long can damage a tree.
