First check the hinge for a set screw or other security feature; a pin that resists gentle tapping may not be designed to come out by this method.
Tools and preparation
Use a nail set, pin punch, or thin rod that fits into the opening at the bottom of the hinge barrel, plus a small hammer. Stanley describes this bottom-hole method for removable-pin hinges. A purpose-built door pin removal tool is another option, but check that the model is intended for your hinge type; product listings do not establish that every tool fits ordinary household hinges.
If you are removing the door rather than just the pin, support the door before the final pin comes free. The hinge connection may release and the door may shift. Door and hinge configurations differ, so there is no single removal order established for every installation.
How to remove a standard hinge pin
- Open the door and inspect the hinge. Look at the knucklesโthe rounded sections that form the hinge barrelโand check for a set screw or other retaining feature before tapping.
- Find the access hole. On a typical removable-pin butt hinge, the hole is at the bottom of the barrel.
- Set the punch in the hole. Hold the nail set or pin punch against the bottom of the pin.
- Tap upward carefully. Strike the tool with controlled hammer blows so the pin rises through the barrel. Stanley describes tapping upward; Ives likewise advises careful removal with a screwdriver and hammer.
- Pull out the raised pin. Once enough of it protrudes, grip it and draw it out. Keep supporting the door if you are taking it down.
Check for a non-removable pin or security feature
Non-removable-pin hinges
An NRP (non-removable pin) hinge is designed to retain its pin. Allegion identifies it by โa small hole with a set screw on the side of the knuckleโ; the screw is hidden when the door is closed. Check the hinge with the door open. Do not keep striking the pin if you find this feature: follow the instructions for that particular hinge.

Other pin-retention and separation features
Some hinges use a set screw in the barrel to retain the pin. Stanley also describes security studs that prevent the hinge leaves from sliding apart even after the pins are removed. In that design, removing the pin alone may not separate the door from the hinge.
If the pin will not move
Stop if gentle, controlled tapping does not raise the pin. Allegion notes that removable pins may be knurled and difficult to remove, and hinge designs vary. Check the manufacturer’s directions for the specific hinge rather than escalating force. The guidance available here does not establish a universal remedy for a painted, corroded, or seized pin, so it does not support drilling, cutting, or forceful prying as general next steps.
