Duct tape can sometimes help remove a stripped screw by giving a driver extra grip, but it is a friction aid—not a guarantee. It is most worth trying when the screw still has a recognizable recess and the correct driver can partly engage. If the bit slips, stop rather than forcing it and worsening the damage.
When duct tape may help
A stripped screw has worn or damaged drive slots, so a screwdriver has trouble gripping it. Tape may fill some of the gap between the driver and the screw, adding friction. Duck Brand suggests duct tape as a way to give a drill more gripping power, while Accu describes the method for lightly damaged heads. Neither source establishes a success rate, so treat the technique as a quick attempt, not a dependable fix.
Before trying it, inspect the head and choose a driver that fits its original shape and size. The method is unlikely to help if the recess is nearly or fully rounded, or if the driver cannot catch at all. Take care with the surrounding surface; a slipping bit can scratch or damage it. American Home Shield discusses the method in the context of household repairs and surface sensitivity.
Try duct tape without forcing the screw
- Seat the right driver. Check whether a correctly sized screwdriver can engage the remaining cross, hex, or other drive shape. If it cannot catch, do not rely on tape to make a badly damaged head driveable.
- Cover the screw head. Put a small piece of duct tape over the head, sticky side down.
- Press the driver into the recess. Push the screwdriver tip gently through the tape so it seats in the damaged drive. The tape should sit between the driver and screw head.
- Turn slowly counterclockwise. Apply steady, controlled pressure as you try to loosen the screw. Avoid sudden twisting or escalating force; stop as soon as the driver slips or fails to catch.
Accu’s guidance describes turning at low speed with high torque; for a hand screwdriver, the practical equivalent is controlled pressure and a slow turn—not simply pushing harder. Duck Brand’s advice specifically mentions using a drill. For its grills, Traeger recommends a hand screwdriver, noting that drills can be harder to control and may over-torque or snap a screw. Follow the product manufacturer’s instructions for a product-specific repair.

If the tape slips, choose the next method by the screw’s condition

The Home Depot advises against forcing a driver that does not work right away and outlines other removal approaches. iFixit’s guide also identifies tool-based options and eye protection for rotary-tool work. These sources do not establish comparative success rates, so choose based on the remaining head shape, whether it protrudes, the surface at risk, and the tools you can use safely.
