Start with mild soapy water and a soft cloth, then follow the exact maker’s guidance for your enamel cookware, cooktop or bathtub and the type of stain.

For a cool, intact enamel surface, start with mild soapy water and a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse and dry. Before trying anything stronger, identify the object and the stain: enamel cookware, a porcelain-enamel cooktop and an enamel bathtub can require different care. Check the exact item’s instructions, because a cleaner that suits one enamel surface may harm another.

Start with the surface and the stain

“Enamel” describes a finish, not a single cleaning rule. The Porcelain Enamel Institute describes the finish generally, but product-specific directions determine what cleaners and tools to use. First establish whether you are cleaning cookware, a cooktop or a bathtub, and check the manufacturer’s care instructions.

Then work out what the mark may be. Food residue, transferred metal, mineral deposits and rust-colored marks have different causes and treatments. If you cannot identify the mark or the finish, avoid escalating to acids, abrasive powders or specialty cleaners until you confirm compatibility.

Remove food residue from enamel cookware

Let the cookware cool as its maker directs. For ordinary food residue, RIESS recommends warm water and soaking, followed by the smooth side of a sponge or a soft brush. Le Creuset likewise recommends warm, soapy water and a short soak for stubborn residue. These are cookware instructions, not general advice for tubs or appliances.

#1 Best Overall
Stardrops The Pink Stuff Miracle Cream Cleaner, 16.9 Fl Oz
  • CUTS THROUGH GREASE & GRIME: Mild abrasive formula cuts through grease, grime, and stubborn messes with minimal effort
  • SPARKLING CLEAN RESULTS: Made with natural particles to provide consistent cleaning power and leave surfaces looking clean and refreshed
  • Non-Abrasive Formula: The cream cleaner’s non-abrasive formula ensures that it cleans effectively without scratching or damaging delicate surfaces, making it safe for use on stainless steel, glass, ceramic, and more.
  • Easy to Apply: Simply apply the cream cleaner to the surface with a damp cloth or sponge, gently rub to remove dirt and stains, and rinse off for a sparkling clean finish.
  • VERSATILE HARD SURFACE CLEANER: Suitable for cleaning hard surfaces throughout kitchens, bathrooms, and other areas of the home

For burnt-on food, RIESS advises soaking the cookware with warm water and dishwashing liquid, then briefly bringing it to a boil before lifting residue with a soft tool. Follow your cookware maker’s instructions and take care with hot water and cookware. Do not scrape with a knife or use a metal scouring pad.

Remove dark marks from cookware

Dark streaks that look like scratches may be metal transferred from cutlery rather than a stain in the enamel. RIESS says such marks on its cookware are usually metal residue; Le Creuset also provides cookware-cleaner guidance for metal markings.

If the cookware maker recommends an enamel cookware cleaner, use only a product whose label and instructions are compatible with that cookware. The cited cleaner guidance is cookware-specific; it does not establish that the same product is suitable for a cooktop or bathtub.

Clean porcelain-enamel cooktops

Make sure the cooktop is off and cool before cleaning, as applicable, and follow its appliance manual. Whirlpool recommends mild liquid detergent and water with a soft cloth or sponge, followed by rinsing and drying. It cautions against abrasive cleaners, steel wool, gritty cloths and rough paper towels.

GE also recommends soap and water and warns not to leave acidic spills—including fruit juice, marinades, tomato sauce and vinegar—on its porcelain cooktop surface. Wipe spills promptly using the method approved for your appliance. Do not apply vinegar as a general-purpose enamel treatment.

Remove limescale from enamel surfaces only when permitted

Vinegar or other acids are not universal enamel cleaners. RIESS says a little vinegar water can remove hard-water stains from its cookware. Gustavsberg describes using household vinegar on a damp cloth for bathroom limescale, followed by thorough rinsing. These are specific maker directions for particular surfaces.

For an enamel bathtub, Gustavsberg recommends routine cleaning with mild detergent and a soft brush or sponge. For specified limescale or discoloration, it describes vinegar or citric or tartaric acid applied to a damp cloth, then thorough rinsing. Confirm that the tub’s exact finish and manufacturer instructions permit the treatment before using it. Do not transfer this advice to a porcelain-enamel cooktop: GE warns against leaving acidic spills on its cooktop finish.

Assess rust-colored marks and chips

A rust-colored mark may be removable residue, or it may signal damage. RIESS says flash rust at exposed enamel edges or beneath the rim of its cookware can be cleaned with washing-up liquid, and recommends drying the cookware thoroughly. This guidance applies to RIESS cookware specifically.

If the enamel is chipped, cleaning will not repair the finish. Le Creuset says cookware with a chip that exposes raw metal should no longer be used. Do not treat a chip, permanent dullness or etching as a stain that can necessarily be removed.

Tools and products to avoid using by default

  • Steel wool, wire brushes and abrasive pads: RIESS, Le Creuset, Gustavsberg and appliance guidance warn against scratch-prone tools or harsh abrasives.
  • Gritty or scouring cleaners: Avoid abrasive products, including those containing sand or ceramic particles, unless the exact item’s maker explicitly permits them.
  • Vinegar on every enamel surface: Some cookware and bathroom instructions allow limited acid use, but GE cautions against acidic spills remaining on its cooktop finish.
  • A single cleaner for every enamel item: Specialty cleaner guidance cited here concerns cookware; it does not establish suitability for tubs or appliances.
