To sharpen garden shears, first identify their blade design and check the model’s instructions. Clean and secure the tool, sharpen only the intended edge along its existing bevel with a suitable file or whetstone, then remove burrs, lubricate the pivot and test the cut. Bypass pruners, anvil pruners, hedge shears and grass shears may need different methods.
Identify the shear and inspect its condition
Before sharpening, determine whether you have bypass pruners, anvil pruners, hedge shears, grass shears or another style. Their cutting surfaces and maintenance requirements differ, so the instructions for the specific model should take precedence. GARDENA, for example, says its bypass shears should be dismantled for sharpening and treats anvil shears separately. Some hedge, sheep and lawn-edging shears may call for a brand-specific sharpener. Look for bent or broken parts, severe corrosion, or damage beyond a dull edge. Sharpening will not correct a damaged tool; consult the maker’s service guidance or replace the affected part if appropriate.
Clean and secure the shears
Remove sap, dirt and debris before sharpening, and clean rust as appropriate. If the manufacturer permits disassembly, keep the parts in order so you can reassemble the tool correctly. Do not take apart a shear simply because another design requires it.

Secure the tool in a clamp or vise so it cannot slip. Wear protective gloves, keep the exposed edge pointed away from your body, and work with controlled strokes. GARDENA specifically recommends protective gloves; UGA Extension advises clamping the tool and moving the file or whetstone away from your body. Too much pressure or a slip can cause injury.
Choose a sharpener that suits the blade
A whetstone or a file—including a diamond file—can be suitable, depending on the shear. GARDENA recommends a whetstone for appropriate shears, while UNH Extension recommends a diamond file for pruners. A clamp helps with workholding; lubricant is for maintenance after sharpening, not a substitute for sharpening. Choose the tool and method specified for your model rather than assuming one sharpener works for every shear.

Sharpen along the existing bevel
Sharpen the edge intended to be sharp, following its factory bevel. Use steady, controlled strokes along the blade; UGA Extension recommends long strokes away from the body. The maker’s directions for your blade or sharpener take precedence if they differ.
Do not assume there is one correct angle for every garden shear. UF/IFAS advises following the factory bevel for most tools designed to be sharp and warns that the wrong angle can ruin pruners. Remove burrs, reassemble and test the cut
After sharpening, remove any burr with a light finishing pass appropriate to the blade. Wipe the tool clean, lubricate the pivot and metal surfaces as the maker directs, then reassemble and adjust it if the design allows. Guidance on cleaning and sharpening is available from UNH Extension, UGA Extension and Illinois Extension.
Test the shears on paper, as the RHS recommends for secateurs. A properly maintained cutting edge should make a clean cut with little effort. If the blade binds, the cut is ragged, or the tool’s parts do not align, stop and check the assembly and model instructions rather than forcing the cut.
