Do not switch on machinery that has been flooded. Keep people away from wet electrical equipment and standing water until authorities say the site is safe; then have the machine assessed by qualified personnel following the manufacturer’s instructions. A motor or machine that looks dry may still have hidden electrical or mechanical damage.
What to do first after machinery is flooded
- Wait for the all-clear. Return only when authorities say the area is safe. Floodwater and debris may be contaminated, so use appropriate protective equipment during cleanup. FEMA and Ready.gov advise: “Do not touch electrical equipment if it is wet or if you are standing in water.” Ready.gov flood safety guidance and FEMA flood preparedness guidance provide general precautions.
- Keep flooded electrical equipment de-energized. Do not test a motor by plugging it in or briefly switching it on. Nidec/U.S. MOTORS says motors exposed to water ingress or flooding should not be energized; they need full analysis and inspection by qualified personnel. Nidec/U.S. MOTORS’ flood-damage guidance.
- Record what happened without approaching hazards. From a safe location, note the machine’s identity, the approximate water level and exposure duration, whether it was energized during or after the flood, and any visible sediment, oil, sewage, salt, or chemical contamination. Photographs can help document condition for the owner, insurer, and service shop.
- Contact the manufacturer and a qualified service provider. Ask for equipment-specific instructions before disassembly, cleaning, or drying. FEMA recommends hiring a qualified flood adjuster before cleanup or repair; follow applicable site procedures and insurer requirements as well.
Why a machine can be damaged even after it looks dry
Floodwater can compromise both electrical insulation and mechanical parts. NEMA identifies potential damage to insulation, switches and switch contacts, capacitors, overload protectors, metallic components, and lubricants. Water and contaminants may remain in places that are not visible from the outside, so surface drying does not establish that a machine is safe to operate. For a motor, the consequences can include impaired winding insulation, corrosion, contaminated lubricant, or damage to bearings and other internal components. The risks vary with machine design, exposure, and what the floodwater carried; a single cleaning or drying method is not appropriate for every machine.
Why the type of floodwater matters
- Saltwater: Salt can accelerate corrosion. Nidec/U.S. MOTORS identifies risks to motor cores and copper or aluminum components, while NEMA and EASA emphasize contamination and appropriate cleaning. Salt residue can remain after the water evaporates.
- Sewage, oil, chemicals, and sediment: These contaminants can complicate cleaning and may introduce hazards beyond ordinary water exposure. Tell the service provider exactly what is known about the water; if industrial chemicals may be involved, the manufacturer and qualified personnel need to determine suitable handling procedures.
- Unknown water: If its source is uncertain, describe it as unknown rather than assuming it was clean. Do not select a cleaning agent, flushing method, or drying temperature yourself.

Can a flooded motor be salvaged?
Sometimes, but appearance alone cannot answer the question. Nidec/U.S. MOTORS describes a professional assessment that can include an incoming visual inspection and electrical tests; opening the motor to inspect internal parts; cleaning; checking mechanical dimensions against design specifications; replacing bearings where indicated; drying the wound stator; reassembly; and final electrical and shop-run tests. This is a qualified service workflow, not a DIY repair procedure. NEMA likewise advises contacting the manufacturer for specific instructions on disassembly, cleaning, and drying by trained personnel.
The process for other machinery may differ substantially. Hydraulic, fuel, control, or other systems can have equipment-specific requirements, and hazardous-area equipment, machines under warranty, and equipment exposed to industrial chemicals require advice appropriate to their design and site.

How professionals weigh repair against replacement
There is no universal salvage percentage, cost threshold, or guarantee that a flooded machine can be returned to service. A qualified evaluation should account for the machine’s condition and contamination as well as its intended safety and reliability requirements.

What to tell the motor or machinery service shop
- Manufacturer, model, serial number, and nameplate data, if available.
- Approximate floodwater level and how long the machine was submerged or exposed.
- Known water type: for example, saltwater, sewage, oil-contaminated water, or water potentially containing chemicals; say if it is unknown.
- Whether the equipment was energized during the flood or switched on afterward.
- Visible contamination or damage, documented from a safe location.
- Any manufacturer, warranty, site-safety, or operational requirements that may affect inspection or return to service.
These details help the shop plan an assessment; they are not a substitute for inspection or a diagnostic test.

Can I turn on a motor after it gets wet?
No. Do not energize a flooded motor. Keep it de-energized until qualified personnel have inspected it and followed the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can machinery be safe to use once it has dried?
Not necessarily. Flooding can leave hidden electrical, mechanical, and contamination-related damage. Dry appearance alone does not establish that equipment is safe.
