There is no validated, source-supported method for safely removing an adhesive label from a CD. Peeling or repositioning one can lift the disc’s protective seal coat and reflective layer, so do not try household heat, water, oil, solvents, or scraping—especially on a valuable or irreplaceable disc.
Why removing a CD label can damage the disc
A CD’s label side is not simply a blank surface beneath a sticker. Its protective coatings and reflective layer can be vulnerable when an adhesive label is pulled away. The Library of Congress technical report warns that removing or repositioning an adhesive-coated label can unintentionally remove protective coatings, and describes the seal coat and reflector lifting with a label in some label-application problems. The documented risk is not a quantified prediction: the cited sources do not establish how often damage occurs across different discs, labels, or adhesives. They also do not provide a tested, approved procedure for removing a label already attached to a CD.
What to do if a label is already attached
If the disc is valuable, unique, or needed for data recovery
Prioritize preserving the disc over removing the label. Do not start an improvised peeling or adhesive-removal attempt. Seek advice from a qualified optical-media conservator or preservation service before taking action. The cited guidance does not identify a particular service or guarantee that removal will be possible without damage.

If you are considering removing it from a replaceable disc
There is still no established safe technique to recommend. The available preservation guidance does not test heat, moisture, oil, solvents, or scraping as label-removal methods. Treat any such approach as an unverified risk, rather than as a proven way to protect the disc.
Do not confuse disc cleaning with label removal
For routine cleaning—not loosening adhesive—Sony says to wipe a CD, DVD, or Blu-ray Disc carefully from the center outward with a soft, dry cloth. Sony warns that benzine, thinner, commercial disc or lens cleaners, vinyl anti-static spray, and liquid cleaners may damage disc contents. Avoid applying adhesive labels to optical discs. Sony specifically says adhesive labels are not recommended for DVDs; that advice is about DVD storage, not a CD-removal method. The Library of Congress technical report documents the related coating risk for CDs.
