Water a polka dot plant when the compost surface has dried slightly, then water thoroughly. Keep the compost moist rather than letting it dry out for a prolonged spell; the right interval depends on the pot’s conditions, not a fixed weekly calendar.
When should you water a polka dot plant?
Check the compost surface before watering. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) advises: “Keep the compost moist but allow the surface to dry out slightly between waterings.” RHS Hypoestes growing guide
When the surface has dried slightly, water enough to thoroughly moisten the compost. Avoid leaving the plant dry for too long: the RHS identifies drooping or wilting as a sign of underwatering and says the plant should recover after thorough watering if it has not been left too long.
Why a fixed watering schedule can mislead
There is no single number of days that suits every polka dot plant. Compost dries at different rates depending on the growing setup and conditions, so use its moisture as your cue rather than copying another plant owner’s calendar.

- Terrarium: A sealed terrarium retains humidity, so its compost dries more slowly and needs watering less often than a typical indoor pot, according to the RHS growing guide.
- Light, temperature and humidity: These conditions affect how quickly the plant uses water and the compost dries. The RHS notes that low humidity can make leaves lose water faster than roots can absorb it, increasing the risk of wilting.
The RHS recommends bright, filtered or indirect light and moderate to high humidity for Hypoestes phyllostachya. It also identifies the plant as suitable for terrariums and bottle gardens. Its profile recommends peat-free, loam-based compost for indoor cultivation. RHS plant profile
How to read watering-related symptoms
Drooping or wilting
This can indicate underwatering. Check the compost; if it is dry, water thoroughly. The RHS says the plant can recover after watering if it has not been left too long. RHS Hypoestes growing guide

Yellowing leaves or leaf drop
These symptoms do not identify the cause by themselves. The RHS lists both overwatering and underwatering, as well as poor growing conditions generally, among possible contributors. Check the compost’s moisture and the plant’s broader conditions before changing how often you water. RHS Hypoestes growing guide
Brown leaf edges
The RHS associates browning edges with low humidity. Do not assume that changing watering frequency alone will address the problem. RHS Hypoestes growing guide

A simple routine for an indoor pot
- Check the compost surface rather than watering on a set date.
- When the surface has dried slightly, water thoroughly.
- In winter, water more sparingly; in a sealed terrarium, check less often because the compost dries more slowly.
- If the plant looks unwell, use the compost and growing conditions to guide your response instead of diagnosing from a leaf symptom alone.
