Let the cut surface dry and callus before planting, then use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix and avoid waterlogging. The right method depends on the plant: a leaf cutting is not a reliable option for every succulent.
Choose the method that suits your succulent
Stem cuttings are an option for many succulents with suitable stems. Leaf cuttings work for certain fleshy-leaved types, but not every species or cultivar will grow from a detached leaf. If you do not know what plant you have, identify it and check its species-specific propagation guidance before taking a cutting.
Iowa State University Extension lists stem propagation for genera including Aeonium, Cotyledon, Echeveria, Graptopetalum, Pachyphytum, Sedum, Euphorbia, Crassula, Senecio, Kalanchoe, Adenium, Epiphyllum (Disocactus), and Schlumbergera. This is a guide to possibilities, not a guarantee for every plant in those groups. Examples of succulents supported for leaf propagation include Echeveria, Crassula, Kalanchoe, Sedum, and Graptopetalum.
| Method | Best suited to | Relative pace |
|---|---|---|
| Stem cutting | Succulents suited to propagation from a stem | Often the more direct choice when a suitable stem is available; no universal rooting time is established. |
| Leaf cutting | Species known to propagate from a whole, healthy leaf | Leaf cuttings take longer to mature than stem cuttings, according to West Virginia University Extension; no universal timeline is established. |
What to prepare
- A healthy parent plant and a suitable stem or intact leaf.
- Clean, sharp scissors or garden snips for a stem cutting.
- A small pot or tray with drainage and a fast-draining rooting medium, such as cactus potting soil or commercial cactus and succulent mix.
Fast drainage matters because persistently wet medium can encourage rot. A glass of water is not a dependable default: Iowa State University Extension notes that most succulents do not root well in water.

How to take and plant a stem cutting
- Choose a healthy stem. Use this method only if the plant is suited to stem propagation. Make a clean cut with a sharp, clean tool.
- Remove lower leaves. Clear any leaves that would sit below the surface of the rooting medium.
- Let the cut end callus. Iowa State advises allowing the stem cut end to dry for several days. Use that as guidance rather than a fixed timer: the aim is to let the cut surface dry before planting.
- Set it in fast-draining medium. Place the callused end into cactus or succulent mix. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources recommends fast-draining soil or commercial cactus and succulent mix.
- Keep conditions from becoming waterlogged. Avoid excess water; the sources do not establish one watering schedule that fits all succulent species and growing conditions.
How to propagate from a leaf
- Confirm that the plant can grow from a leaf. Choose a healthy, whole leaf. A torn or incomplete leaf is a poor starting point.
- Detach it cleanly and let the end callus. The Royal Horticultural Society gives a day or two as guidance for succulent leaves. Treat this as an indication, not a universal timer.
- Lay the leaf on the medium. Use slightly damp, well-drained rooting mix. Place the end that was attached to the stem at or just above the surface; do not bury the whole leaf.
- Keep it from sitting in wet conditions. Use a container that drains and do not let the rooting medium become waterlogged.
Leaf propagation takes longer to mature than stem propagation, so choose a suitable stem if you want the more direct route and the plant supports it. Neither method has a single reliable rooting timetable across all species and conditions.

Common problems to avoid
- Planting a fresh, wet cut: let stem and leaf cut surfaces dry and callus before placing them in the medium.
- Using dense or waterlogged soil: choose a fast-draining rooting mix and a container with drainage to reduce the risk of rot.
- Putting the leaf too deep: rest it on the medium with its former attachment end at or just above the surface.
- Assuming every succulent grows from a leaf or roots in water: propagation varies by plant, and water is not a dependable default for most succulents.
- Expecting a fixed timeline: progress depends on the plant and conditions; the available guidance does not establish a universal number of days or weeks.
