If they must stay outside, group them in a protected spot, insulate the pots, and cover the foliage with a secured cover that reaches the ground. Act on the local forecast and the plant’s cold tolerance—not on one universal frost date.
When should you protect potted plants?
Watch local overnight forecasts in fall and prioritize tropical plants, annuals, and any valuable container plant with limited cold tolerance. Iowa State University Extension advises taking precautions when temperatures are forecast to dip into the mid-30s °F for the outdoor vegetables, annuals, and tropicals it identifies. That is a practical early-warning trigger, not a biological cutoff for every species. Some tropicals are vulnerable at warmer temperatures, and susceptibility depends on the plant and conditions; see UF/IFAS cold-protection guidance.
A frost and a freeze are not interchangeable. Iowa State defines a freeze as air and plant interiors dropping below 32°F (0°C); freezing temperatures can injure plant tissue, while frost may occur under conditions that are less damaging. A sudden cold snap after warm weather can also be harder on plants that have had little time to acclimate. Forecast lows are not exact readings for every leaf or pot: exposure, wind, duration, and the shelter’s temperature all affect risk.
Move tender pots first if possible
For a one-night event, relocation is usually the simplest and most dependable option for a tender plant. Bring the pot into a heated room, enclosed porch, or other protected space that stays warm enough for that species. Texas A&M AgriLife Extension calls moving a valuable container plant to a garage or another protected location a good way to protect it during a killing freeze; a garage is useful only if its temperature is suitable for the plant.

- Lightweight & Breathable: Plant covers allow sunlight, air, and moisture to pass through freely, supporting healthy growth while protecting plants from frost and cold damage.
- Available in Multiple Sizes: Small 40"×15"×18" (fits potted plants & garden boxes), Medium 55"×28"×18" (fits 2'×4' raised bed), and Large 102"×50"×22" (fits 4'×8' raised bed).
Start with the most cold-sensitive, valuable, and easiest-to-move containers. For heavy pots, use a wheeled plant caddy if available. A brief emergency move indoors is different from keeping a plant inside for winter: NC State Extension advises a gradual transition when overwintering plants indoors, where light and humidity differ from outdoor conditions.
If the pots must remain outside
Choose a sheltered spot and group containers
Move pots close together beside a protected side of the house or another sheltered location. Set them on the ground rather than on an exposed deck or stand when practical. Grouping and shelter reduce exposure, but do not make a severe or prolonged freeze harmless.

Insulate the pot and root zone
Container roots are more exposed to cold than roots in the ground, so protecting foliage alone may not be enough. Wrap pots or surround them with frost blanket, bubble wrap, foam, quilt batting, leaves, or straw. Keep drainage holes clear and do not leave the pot standing in water. If the insulating material can become saturated, keep it from soaking where practical. Container size and material also affect how quickly the root zone is exposed to cold.
Cover foliage without crushing it
Use frost fabric, a frost blanket, row cover, sheet, or blanket. Support the cover on stakes, hoops, or another frame so it does not rest on leaves and stems; contact points can transfer cold to foliage. Let the edges reach the ground to help trap heat released from the soil, then secure them against wind so the cover does not blow away. Plastic can be used only if it is held off the foliage, and it should be removed or ventilated in sunny weather.

Remove temporary covers after the cold passes and daytime temperatures rise above freezing. A cover can help against frost or modest cold, but it is not a guarantee through a hard freeze. Iowa State University Extension says covering is typically no longer effective at preventing cold damage once temperatures drop below about 28°F; it also notes that damage can occur above that level when subfreezing conditions last five hours or more. These are source-specific rules of thumb, not promises for every plant, site, or cover.
Water carefully before and after the cold
Moist soil can absorb and release more heat than dry soil, and Texas A&M AgriLife recommends thoroughly watering container plants before a freeze. If the potting mix is dry, water before the cold arrives while temperatures remain safely above freezing; avoid saturating the mix or leaving the container waterlogged. Do not water plants at or below freezing, as Oregon State University Extension advises.

Do not run an ordinary home sprinkler over plants during a freeze. UF/IFAS cautions that typical home irrigation systems usually cannot supply enough water for the specialized, continuous sprinkling method used by commercial growers, so ordinary sprinkling can do more harm than good.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Check plants after the cold night
Once temperatures are above freezing, remove temporary covers. Check whether the potting mix is dry or frozen, and water when conditions are suitable and the plant can use it. Cold injury—especially on woody growth—may not be obvious immediately. Wait for clearer signs of damage or spring growth before pruning; damaged foliage can provide some insulation if another cold night is forecast.
