Epazote (Dysphania ambrosioides) is easy to grow from seed in a sunny spot with moist, well-drained soil. Sow more seed every few weeks for a steady supply, harvest stem tips to encourage tender growth, and remove unwanted seedlings before the herb spreads around the garden.

Choose a sunny site and plan for its spread

Epazote grows best in full sun and moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soil. University of Illinois Extension describes it as an easy annual to grow from seed; North Carolina State Extension also recommends a sunny site with moist, well-drained soil.

Allow room for a potentially tall plant: North Carolina State Extension gives a mature height range of 2–5 feet, while Illinois Extension describes plants around 4 feet tall. These are source estimates, not a guaranteed size. Epazote self-seeds freely and can spread quickly, so choose a container or plan to pull seedlings that appear where they are not wanted. How to grow epazote from seed

  1. Choose when to sow for your location. Sow when local conditions are suitable for growing this warm-season herb. The cited growing guidance does not establish one universal sowing date or frost schedule, so follow local seasonal advice rather than a fixed calendar.
  2. Sow the seed. Epazote is readily grown from seed. The Texas A&M AgriLife fact sheet reports germination in 7–21 days; actual timing can vary with growing conditions.
  3. Keep the soil adequately moist as plants establish. Texas A&M AgriLife notes that early growth needs plenty of water. After establishment, continue to keep the soil moist without leaving the plant in poorly drained ground.
  4. Make repeat sowings for an ongoing harvest. University of Illinois Extension suggests sowing successive batches every 2–3 weeks to extend the supply of leaves.

The available guidance supports growing epazote from seed but does not establish a specific seed depth or spacing. Texas A&M AgriLife fact sheet

Choose between a container and an open garden bed

Both approaches can work; the main practical difference is how easily you can manage self-seeding.

Growing option Why choose it What to manage
Container Keeps the plant contained and makes it easier to control where seedlings grow. Provide full sun and moist, well-drained soil; remove any seedlings that appear outside the pot.
Open ground Lets the plant grow in a garden bed. Harvest regularly and remove unwanted seedlings before they establish, because epazote self-seeds freely.

UIC Heritage Garden identifies container growing as an option because epazote can spread quickly. The sources do not establish that either method produces better growth in all conditions.

Care for the plant and harvest tender leaves

Once the plant is growing, pinch or harvest the stem tips regularly. Illinois Extension says this provides young, tender leaves and encourages a more compact, bushy plant. Removing tips also helps limit flowering and seed production, making regular harvesting useful for managing spread.

Texas A&M AgriLife gives about 50 days after planting as an approximate harvest reference. Treat it as an estimate rather than a fixed deadline: weather and growing conditions affect how quickly plants develop.

Use epazote as a culinary herb, not a remedy

Epazote has a strong flavor and is used as a seasoning in foods such as beans, quesadillas, tamales, soups, and salsas. The Mexican Ministry of Agriculture warns that ascaridole can be very toxic when consumed in large quantities. Keep use to ordinary culinary seasoning; do not use epazote oil or seeds as a home remedy. Mexican Ministry of Agriculture
