Use speaker cable specifically rated for direct burial and the outdoor conditions along its route. You can bury a cable without conduit only when its manufacturer approves that use; conduit can add physical protection and may make future replacement easier, but it does not automatically make an unsuitable cable appropriate for burial. Check local requirements and identify buried utilities before digging—there is no single trench depth that applies to every site.
Choose cable rated for the route
Do not assume ordinary indoor speaker wire is suitable for underground or exposed outdoor use. Check the cable’s full markings and manufacturer instructions for direct burial, sunlight and moisture exposure. For example, Southwire’s
A cable’s other classification alone should not be treated as proof of direct-burial approval. Verify the particular product’s stated applications rather than relying on a label or category in isolation.

Russound’s Acclaim 5 Series installation instructions describe routing cable through conduit and advise installers to consult the cable manufacturer and follow applicable electrical codes. If using PVC conduit, the manual describes connecting lengths and elbows with PVC cement before running the cable. Requirements for a particular cable and wiring method can depend on local rules, so confirm them for your installation.

Confirm trench depth locally
Do not treat one depth as a universal requirement. Russound says frost depth varies by location and advises following applicable local requirements. A Definitive Technology Dymension Outdoor manual specifies a 4–5 inch trench for its particular system while directing users to observe local trenching limitations. Those are product-specific instructions, not a general code rule.
Before digging, check the requirements that apply to your property, route and chosen installation method. Do not infer a code depth from another speaker’s manual or a general online depth range.

Plan the run and select the wire size
- Check the route before trenching. Contact the appropriate local utility services about buried cables and pipes, and account for water, gas and other buried obstructions. Confirm local requirements before you dig.
- Lay out the run. Russound recommends laying cable along the ground between the speaker and the outdoor volume control to estimate the required length before digging. Include the route’s actual bends and transitions when measuring.
- Match the cable to the system. Follow the speaker manufacturer’s guidance for conductor count and gauge. For its Dymension Outdoor system, Definitive Technology recommends color-coded 4-conductor direct-burial cable, such as 14/4, and lists 16 AWG for runs up to 150 feet and 14 AWG for runs up to 250 feet. These are recommendations for that system, not a universal sizing chart.
- Choose direct burial or conduit. Base the choice on the cable instructions, route exposure, physical-damage risk, serviceability and local requirements.
Make connections and protect transitions
- Connect conductors to the correct speaker terminals and preserve polarity. Russound’s instructions use red for positive and black for negative with standard red/black cable; follow the actual wire colors and equipment markings in your system.
- Twist stranded conductors together neatly and check that no loose strands can touch another terminal or conductor.
- Use terminations suitable for outdoor exposure and protect them from moisture. Russound recommends silicone-impregnated wire nuts and additional silicone if needed; use connectors and sealing methods appropriate to the specific equipment and cable.
- Protect cable where it emerges from the ground or passes through a structure. Russound recommends leaving three feet of cable under the speaker for future adjustment and sealing wall penetrations with silicone. Follow the speaker maker’s directions for the actual installation.
