For longer harvests, cut each stem just above a pair of leaves, and remove developing flower buds when culinary foliage is your priority. These are extension recommendations, not a guaranteed yield formula.
Where to cut basil
Pinch the soft growing tip at the end of a stem to encourage branching. The University of Illinois Extension says tip pinching encourages a bushier plant and more leaf growth: Basil | Herbs.
When you want to harvest a longer stem, make a clean cut just above a pair of leaves. The University of Minnesota Extension notes that new growth should emerge at the cut point: Growing basil in home gardens.
An Illinois Extension backyard-basil article advises leaving at least half the plant after cutting stems and says new growth may appear at the cut point within a week. Treat both as practical guidance from that article, not a universal threshold or guaranteed regrowth time; plant vigor and growing conditions matter: Backyard basil.

How often to prune basil
Prune periodically throughout the growing season as stems grow. The Minnesota Extension recommends regular pruning to maintain succulent, productive growth, but does not set a universal weekly interval. Check the plant as it develops and pinch growing tips when you want it to branch.
Should you remove basil flowers?
Remove developing flower buds as they appear if your main goal is culinary leaves. Illinois Extension notes that flowering can affect leaf flavor, while Minnesota Extension says flowering and seed formation can make plants woodier and reduce yield.

Flowering is a valid choice if you value the blooms or want an ornamental plant. You can let some plants flower and keep pinching buds on others, depending on whether leaves or flowers matter more to you.
Pinching by hand or using pruners
Soft stem tips and developing buds can be pinched off by hand. For thicker stems or longer harvests, use sharp pruners or a sharp knife to make a clean cut. A tool is optional; it is not necessary for tender growth.

Extension guidance describes qualitative benefits—bushier growth and continued leaf production—not a measured percentage increase in harvest. There is no fixed pruning schedule or guaranteed yield gain established by these recommendations. Results depend on plant vigor, growing conditions, and whether you prioritize leaves or flowers.
