Do not apply Epsom salt to zucchini as a routine fertilizer or general yield booster. It is magnesium sulfate, so use it only when a soil test or a credible diagnosis indicates that your soil needs magnesium—and follow the rate recommended for your location. The sources cited here do not establish a universal home-garden dose for zucchini.
First, check whether the leaves point to magnesium deficiency
Magnesium deficiency often begins as yellowing between the veins on older, lower leaves. It is more likely in light or sandy soils, and heavy use of high-potassium fertilizer can contribute. This pattern is a clue, not proof: yellowing between the veins on young leaves near the top can instead indicate iron deficiency. See the diagnostic guidance from UGA Cooperative Extension and the University of Kentucky.
Yellow leaves alone are not enough to justify adding magnesium. Other problems can look similar, and excess magnesium can interfere with plants’ uptake of other nutrients. UF/IFAS Extension advises gardeners to confirm that magnesium is needed before applying it; the UF/IFAS explanation and University of Maryland Extension guidance both caution against unneeded applications.
Get a soil test before adding Epsom salt
A soil test is the practical way to check magnesium levels and determine whether the soil also needs a pH adjustment. Use a local soil-testing service and follow its sampling instructions; interpretation and recommendations can vary with the region and test method. If the result does not call for magnesium, do not add Epsom salt.

If the test confirms low magnesium, follow its recommended amendment and rate rather than estimating a dose for an individual plant. Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur, but it is not a liming material: it does not serve the same pH-correcting purpose as lime.
Choose the amendment that matches the test
| Option | When it fits | Main caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Soil test first | The cause of symptoms or the soil’s nutrient levels are unknown. | Recommendations depend on the test method and local conditions. |
| Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) | A soil test or credible diagnosis indicates that magnesium is needed, and the local recommendation calls for it. | Unneeded magnesium can interfere with uptake of other nutrients. No universal home-garden zucchini rate is established by the sources cited here. |
| Dolomitic lime | Magnesium is low and the soil also needs liming. | It changes soil acidity, so use it only when the soil-test recommendation supports it. |
The University of Kentucky and Oregon State University Extension discuss magnesium sources for cucurbit or vine crops. The right choice depends on your soil results, not on a fixed habit of applying one product.

- Contains natural ingredients to feed microbes in the soil
- Specially formulated with micronutrients to help plants grow strong and produce more fruits and vegetables versus unfed plants
- Calcium helps form stronger cell walls, producing better quality and longer-lasting fruits and vegetables. Plus, it helps prevent disorders in edible crops commonly associated with calcium deficiency.
- Feeds up to 3 months; For use in ground and in containers
- Now contains natural ingredients that helps feed and nourish above and below soil, for even better quality and longer lasting fruits and vegetables versus unfed plants
Why a commercial rate is not a backyard recipe
Oregon State University Extension gives a commercial vine-crop recommendation of 10 lb of Epsom salts in 100 gallons of water per acre when deficiency symptoms appear. That regional field guidance is not a dose for one zucchini plant, a household watering can, or a home garden. The cited sources do not establish a zucchini-specific home-garden application rate, so converting the field figure into one would be misleading.
University of Kentucky’s cucurbit scouting guidance also mentions at least 200 lb magnesium per acre as a crop-sc scouting guideline. That figure is not an independent home-garden target or a substitute for a soil test. Follow the recommendation from your local test service instead.

- Produce abundant and vibrant fruit and blooms! This product works by strengthening your plant's roots to increase nutrient uptake… enabling it to bloom and produce like you've never seen!
- Use on all flower / fruit / vegetable producing plants (we've seen amazing results with citrus trees, avocados, raspberries, cantaloupe, roses, petunias, etc… but this formula will work on a wide range of plants)
- Super, super concentrated - A little goes a LONG way (we recommend you dilute at a rate of 1 teaspoon per 2 gallons of water)
- Easy to use - simply dilute with water and pour or spray on your plants with their regular watering routine… repeat every 2-4 weeks
- Formulated especially for late season (late summer / early fall) application… this is exactly what your plants need in the later stages of the growth cycle
Do not use Epsom salt for blossom-end rot
Epsom salt does not prevent or reverse blossom-end rot. University of Maryland Extension identifies calcium shortage as the cause of the fruit tissue breakdown described in its soil-amendment guidance; adding magnesium is not a treatment for that problem. Nor do the cited sources establish that routine Epsom salt improves zucchini yield.
