Grow holiday cactus in bright, indirect light, a draining pot and medium, and with watering adjusted to its growth stage. To encourage blooms, give Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus long, uninterrupted nights and cool conditions; keep the plant steady while buds form. Because store labels and bloom dates can mislead, use the stem segments to identify which type you have.

How to tell Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas cactus apart

“Holiday cactus” refers to several related plants, not one species. Iowa State University Extension identifies the three commonly grown types as Thanksgiving cactus (Schlumbergera truncata), Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera × buckleyi) and Easter cactus (Schlumbergera gaertneri). Compare the edges and tips of the flattened stem segments rather than relying on the plant’s retail label.

Type Stem segments Usual flowering season
Thanksgiving cactus Pointed teeth along the edges Late fall to early winter
Christmas cactus Scalloped edges without pointed teeth Later in winter
Easter cactus Smoother edges with slight ripples; brownish bristles at the tips Mainly spring

These seasonal windows are clues, not guarantees. Many plants sold as Christmas cactus are Thanksgiving cactus or hybrids, and growers can manipulate flowering time for retail sales. For more identification detail, see Iowa State University Extension’s holiday cactus guide and the University of Illinois Extension’s 2024 overview.

Set up the right light, pot, and growing medium

Place the plant where it receives bright, indirect light. Use a pot with drainage holes and a medium that drains well. A special cactus mix is not essential if ordinary potting soil drains adequately, according to Iowa State University Extension.

#1 Best Overall
Christmas Cactus Variety 4pack - 4 Live Starter Plants - Schlumbergera Bridgesii - Growers Choice Beautiful Colorful Tropical Indoor Succulent
  • Physical Characteristics: This plant is instantly recognizable for its flat, segmented stems that resemble small, green leaf-like pads joined end to end. In bloom, tubular flowers appear at the tips, often measuring two to three inches across and displaying vivid colors from crimson to pure white. When mature, the cascading stems can drape elegantly over container edges, creating a soft, trailing habit. This blend of unique foliage and brilliant flowers ensures year-round appeal.
  • Sunlight Requirements: The Christmas Cactus flourishes in bright, indirect light that mimics its natural forest habitat. A spot near an east-facing or north-facing window provides the best balance of light without the stress of intense sun. Direct afternoon rays should be avoided, as too much exposure can cause the foliage to appear pale. Gentle morning sun, combined with ample indirect brightness, supports healthy growth and encourages more prolific blooming cycles.
  • Watering Guidelines: This cactus prefers consistent moisture rather than extended dryness. Allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings, then water thoroughly until excess drains away. Overwatering should be avoided, but prolonged neglect is equally harmful. Maintaining even hydration, particularly during the active growth and blooming periods, helps the plant sustain lush foliage and support clusters of long-lasting flowers.
  • Growth Rate and Maintenance: A moderately paced grower, the Christmas Cactus develops new stem segments throughout the year and may gradually extend into a full, arching display. Trimming or pinching back stems after the blooming season encourages branching and a fuller shape. With minimal shaping, the plant naturally cascades to form elegant, flowing lines. Its steady but not overwhelming growth rate makes it easy to maintain indoors while still providing noticeable seasonal progress.

Holiday cacti are epiphytes native to humid Brazilian forests, so they need different care from desert cacti. Do not keep the medium bone-dry for long stretches simply because the plant is called a cactus. Iowa State gives 60–70°F as a suitable indoor temperature range. For flower initiation, the University of Minnesota recommends bright, cool conditions and cautions that nights above 65°F may inhibit blooming under its described approach. Cultivars and home conditions vary, so these ranges are guidance rather than a bloom guarantee.

Water according to the plant’s stage

Water thoroughly, then let the growing medium dry between waterings when the plant is not budding or flowering. During bud development and bloom, do not let it become excessively dry. At any stage, avoid keeping the medium persistently wet, which can contribute to root rot.

There is no reliable fixed calendar interval: how quickly the medium dries depends on the pot, soil, temperature and light. Check the medium before watering instead of following a schedule designed for a different home or container.

Encourage Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus to bloom

Shortening days and/or cool nights prompt Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus to set buds. Iowa State University Extension says many cultivars need 14–16 hours of uninterrupted darkness. The University of Minnesota describes approximately six weeks of short days for Thanksgiving and Christmas cactus. Treat these as useful source-specific guidance, not universal thresholds for every cultivar. A lamp switched on at night can interrupt the dark period.

Keep the plant’s conditions steady once buds appear. Moving it, sudden temperature changes, drafts, excessive watering or letting the medium dry too far can cause buds to drop. Once flowers begin opening, you can display the plant elsewhere with care.

Give Easter cactus its seasonal bud-setting conditions

Easter cactus has a different, more staged routine in Iowa State University Extension’s guidance:

The University of Minnesota gives a separate estimate of 8–12 weeks for Easter cactus bud setting. These recommendations describe different guidance, not an exact schedule that every plant will follow.

Propagate holiday cactus from stem cuttings

Holiday cactus is easy to propagate, but rooting time varies. Iowa State University Extension gives 6–8 weeks for roots to form; Penn State Extension’s Holiday Cacti Care, updated September 8, 2025, describes rooting in three to eight weeks.

  1. At a joint, take a cutting of 2–5 stem segments. Penn State describes using three to five segments.
  2. Leave the cut end to callus overnight.
  3. Insert the cutting about an inch into moist perlite or coarse sand. Keep it upright; do not invert it.
  4. Place it in bright light and water when the medium begins to dry.
  5. Once roots are established, transplant it into a well-draining potting mix.

Troubleshoot the most common problems

No flowers

Check whether the plant is getting sufficiently long, uninterrupted nights and cool enough conditions for its type and cultivar. Artificial light at night may disrupt the dark period.

Buds drop before opening

Look for recent moves, abrupt temperature changes, drafts, nighttime light or watering extremes. Keep the plant’s location and care steady while buds develop.

Limp growth or suspected root rot

Check whether the medium stays wet too long. Improve drainage and, outside the bud and flowering period, allow it to dry between waterings.

Small brown bumps or sticky residue

Iowa State University Extension describes these signs as consistent with scale. Identify the pest before choosing a treatment; the same symptoms should not be treated as proof of an infestation without checking the plant.

Choose a plant by its stems, not its holiday label

When buying an Easter, Thanksgiving or Christmas cactus, inspect the segment edges and tips to identify the type. Choose a plant with healthy-looking stems, and use the same checks at home to guide its seasonal flowering routine. Retail names are not always precise, and a plant’s flowering date may have been influenced by commercial growing conditions.
