Grow lavender in a sunny spot with fast-draining soil, water it regularly through its first summer, and prune lightly after flowering. The main causes of failure are persistently wet roots and choosing a tender cultivar for a cold, exposed site. If your soil stays wet, use a raised bed or a container with generous drainage.

Choose a lavender suited to your climate

Lavenders differ in size, flower and foliage appearance, fragrance, and winter hardiness. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) and its hybrids (L. × intermedia) are common garden choices and are generally hardier than French lavender, but cultivar and local conditions matter. Check the plant label for suitability where you live rather than assuming a type will be hardy everywhere. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) compares the main growing considerations in its lavender growing guide.

Type Winter hardiness Size, flowers, and fragrance Bed or container
English lavender (L. angustifolia) Generally hardier; check the individual cultivar and local conditions. Size, flower colour, foliage, and fragrance vary by cultivar; consult the plant label. Often suitable for a sunny, free-draining garden bed; containers are also an option.
English lavender hybrids (L. × intermedia) Generally among the hardier common garden choices; check the individual cultivar. Size and flower and foliage characteristics vary; consult the plant label. Can be grown in a suitable garden bed or container, depending on cultivar and space.
French lavender (L. stoechas) and other tender types Less hardy than English lavender and its hybrids. Appearance, size, and fragrance vary by cultivar. Often better in a container that can be moved to shelter in winter.

Pick a sunny, well-drained site

Lavender needs full sun and soil that drains freely. It tolerates poor or moderately fertile soil and generally does not need rich feeding. Shade, heavy clay, and ground that stays waterlogged—especially in winter—make plants more vulnerable to root rot.

Spring is the RHS-recommended planting season in its UK guidance. Adapt seasonal timing to your local climate and hemisphere. On heavy soil, the RHS recommends planting on a mound or ridge, or in a raised bed 20–30 cm (8–12 in) high, to keep roots out of persistently wet ground. For grouped plants, its approximate spacing is 90 cm (3 ft); hedges may be planted closer depending on cultivar size.

Plant lavender in the ground or a pot

In a garden bed

  1. Choose a sunny position with free-draining soil, away from places that remain wet.
  2. If the soil is heavy, make a mound or ridge, or prepare a raised bed 20–30 cm (8–12 in) high.
  3. Plant in spring where that timing suits your local conditions, keeping the plant at its previous soil level.
  4. Space grouped plants about 90 cm (3 ft) apart as a general RHS recommendation; adjust for the cultivar and any hedge plan.
  5. Water regularly through the first summer while the plant establishes.

In a container

A pot is useful where garden soil drains poorly, or when you need to shelter a tender lavender in winter. For UK gardeners, the RHS suggests a large pot about 30–40 cm (12–16 in) across, with large drainage holes. It recommends peat-free multipurpose or loam-based compost, with up to 25% coarse grit by volume to improve drainage. Follow the plant label and use suitable locally available materials; keep the lavender at the same soil level it was growing at before.

Water and feed according to where it grows

  • New plants in the ground: Water regularly during their first summer, particularly in dry weather.
  • Established plants in the ground: They are drought tolerant and rarely need watering except in severe drought.
  • Container plants: Check compost more often in warm weather because pots dry faster. Water when the compost is drying, but avoid leaving roots in waterlogged compost.
  • Winter containers: Keep the compost comparatively dry and shelter pots from persistent rain and harsh weather.
  • Feeding: Lavender prefers low-nutrient soil and generally does not need fertilizer.

Deadhead spent flowers if you want to encourage more blooms. Toward the end of the season, leaving some flower heads can provide seed for birds.

Prune lightly after flowering

Trim once a year in late summer after flowering, following local seasonal timing. Remove the spent flower stalks and about 2.5 cm (1 in) of leafy growth to keep the plant compact. Spring clipping can tidy untidy or frost-damaged foliage.

Do not cut into old, bare woody stems: lavender does not readily produce new growth from old wood. Older plants that have become woody or misshapen may be better replaced than hard-pruned.

Propagate plants and harvest flowers

Cuttings are the reliable choice when you want new plants to match a named cultivar. Take softwood or semi-ripe cuttings in early to midsummer, or hardwood cuttings after flowering in late autumn, preferably from a new flush of growth. Plants grown from cuttings retain the parent’s identity. Seedlings from cultivars can differ from the parent. The RHS guide covers both methods.

For dried flowers, Utah State University Extension’s regionally framed guide to English lavender says to cut flower stalks when the first two flowers on a spike have opened. That timing is specific guidance for English lavender, not a universal harvest specification. The guide is available from Utah State University Extension.

Prevent common problems

  • Root rot: The central preventable risk is persistently wet soil or compost. Improve drainage, raise the planting area, or grow in a container with drainage holes.
  • Winter loss: Match the cultivar to local conditions. Tender lavenders and container-grown roots need more protection from cold and persistent rain.
  • Pests and disease: The RHS lists rosemary beetle, sage and Ligurian leafhopper, cuckoo spit, and Xylella fastidiosa among possible problems. It says pest damage is often cosmetic and treatment is not usually needed. The RHS also identifies lavender as a high-risk host for Xylella and advises awareness when buying imported plants.
