Biochar is made by heating suitable biomass in a limited-oxygen environment through pyrolysis. The process produces char along with gases and liquids; it is not the same as open burning. The right feedstock, equipment, and operating conditions depend on your scale and intended use, and local rules may limit what you can process or how you do it.

What happens during biochar production?

Pyrolysis thermally decomposes biomass while limiting its exposure to oxygen. In a suitable system, some of the biomass becomes a relatively stable carbon-rich solid, while gases and liquids are also produced. The International Biochar Initiative explains the process and range of production technologies in its basic principles of biochar production.

Conditions matter: feedstock and the temperature and duration of heating affect the resulting material’s properties. USDA Climate Hubs and the International Biochar Initiative both describe this variability. There is no single temperature or recipe established as best for every feedstock, device, and end use.

Choose and screen the feedstock

Potential feedstocks include clean crop residues, yard trimmings, food residues, and forestry materials. They are not interchangeable: their availability, existing uses, and resulting char properties differ. The International Biochar Initiative’s feedstock overview discusses material types and contamination concerns.

  • Weight: 2.5(kg)
  • 【What is a Smokeless Biochar Kilns?】The Smokeless Biochar Kiln is a product made from a stainless steel plate processed into a conical shape.Burning dried branches and bamboo in a Smokeless Biochar Kiln, anyone can easily produce a large amount of biochar in a short time. This product makes it easy for anyone to dispose of prunings in wineries and Kleingarten (citizen's vegetable gardens). It's a product that has been gaining attention in Japan in recent years.
  • 【The key point is the unique shape】This uses the ancient fire cap method, but the efficiency is on a whole new level. When the Smokeless Biochar Kilns is heated, a "convection current" is created, a flow of air that draws in from the outside to the inside.Smoke is drawn into this air flow and secondary combustion occurs, so little smoke is produced.
  • Use material whose identity and origin you can establish.
  • Remove or reject feedstock that may contain paint, preservatives, plastics, metals, or other contaminants; do not assume an unfamiliar waste is suitable because it is biomass.
  • Consider whether the material has a more important competing use, such as retaining residues for another land-management purpose.
  • Do not treat sewage, industrial waste, or landfill waste as routine feedstocks. Their composition, contamination risks, and regulatory status require careful evaluation.

Choose a method appropriate to your scale

Methods range from simple small-batch approaches to engineered production systems. Equipment choice affects control of oxygen, process conditions, emissions, and risk. A method that may be discussed for a small batch is not automatically suitable for larger production or for treating regulated waste.

Small batches

Oklahoma State University Extension describes preparing biochar with a double-barrel arrangement and recommends heat-resistant gloves and safety glasses. Its guidance is a small-batch approach, not a blanket assurance that any improvised setup is safe. Review the Oklahoma State Extension preparation guidance before considering this scale.

Engineered or waste-treatment systems

For larger or regulated operations, use equipment designed to control the process and emissions, and determine applicable requirements before starting. The International Biochar Initiative’s technology overview describes the range of production systems and safety considerations.

Temperature and duration: use guidance in context

Washington State University Extension’s Biochar: A Gardener’s Primer describes production temperatures of at least 500°C and, when discussing high-quality biochar cooked for several hours, gives a broader range of 350°C to 700°C. These are that publication’s guidance, not universal operating specifications. Feedstock, equipment design, heating duration, intended properties, and emissions controls all matter.

Do not copy a temperature figure without checking that it applies to your feedstock and system. The cited sources do not establish one optimal setpoint, duration, or production yield for all circumstances.

Plan safety and emissions controls before heating

Biochar production involves high heat and can release gases and other atmospheric contaminants. Personal protective equipment is only one part of safe operation; it does not make an unsuitable or uncontrolled setup safe. Follow the equipment maker’s operating requirements, choose a location and process appropriate to the fire and air-quality risks, and minimize atmospheric contaminants. International Biochar Initiative guidance discusses production safety and emissions; Oklahoma State Extension identifies heat-resistant gloves and glasses for its small-batch preparation method.

Check local requirements, especially when treating waste

Rules depend on location, material classification, storage, equipment, and intended use. In England, the Environment Agency’s LRWP 60, updated 13 January 2026, applies only to specified untreated plant and wood waste types and qualifying conditions. It allows storage of up to 30 tonnes at the manufacturing site and requires a purpose-designed pyrolysis unit with maximum throughput of 50 kg per hour. These are conditions of that England-specific regulatory position, not worldwide operating limits.

The Environment Agency states that “only make biochar by pyrolysis in a unit specifically designed for this process, with a maximum throughput of 50kg per hour” as a condition of LRWP 60. Check the live position and its listed waste types and conditions before relying on it. England’s separate RPS 366 concerns qualifying storage and land spreading; it is not a general production rule. Elsewhere, check the relevant environmental, fire, air-quality, and waste requirements.

Decide how the biochar will be used

Making biochar does not guarantee a particular soil or water outcome. Properties depend on the starting material and production conditions, while results also depend on where and how it is applied. Penn State Extension discusses opportunities and limitations in its review of biochar for soil health and water quality.

Before producing a batch, identify the specific soil need it is meant to address and whether the material is appropriate for that use. For garden or agricultural application, seek advice from a local extension service or qualified adviser rather than assuming a universal rate or benefit.
