To grow mint from seed, sow it indoors about 8 to 10 weeks before your area’s last spring frost. Press the tiny seeds onto moist seed-starting mix or cover them only lightly, then keep the mix consistently moist and give seedlings bright light. Once established, move them to a pot with drainage. Keep mint contained: it spreads readily by underground rhizomes and surface runners.

Is seed the right way to start mint?

Growing mint from seed is a good choice if you want to raise plants from a seed packet and are comfortable with some variation. Seedlings may differ in vigor and flavor, so seed is less reliable when you need to preserve a particular named cultivar. Peppermint is a hybrid; for a specific mint’s characteristics, starting with a cutting or division is generally the better route. Iowa State Extension discusses this distinction in its mint-growing guidance, as do the UC Master Gardener Program of Sonoma County.

If you do choose seed, select a packet that identifies the mint type. Spearmint is a common culinary option. Follow the packet if it gives specific sowing directions for that variety.

When to sow mint seeds indoors

Start seeds about 8 to 10 weeks before your local last spring frost, the timing recommended by the UC Statewide IPM Program and UC Master Gardeners. Use your area’s frost date rather than a fixed calendar date: the appropriate sowing date varies by location. The UC IPM page includes California-specific planting context, while the frost-relative interval is more broadly useful.

How to sow mint seeds

  1. Prepare the mix. Fill a clean seed-starting tray or small pot with moist seed-starting mix. Moisten it before sowing so the tiny seeds are less likely to wash away.
  2. Sow on or near the surface. Scatter seeds over the mix and press them gently into contact. Ohio State recommends a light covering; Sonoma County Master Gardeners recommend pressing seeds into damp mix without covering them. Both approaches keep seeds close to the surface. If your packet specifies otherwise, follow its directions.
  3. Keep the surface moist. Mist gently or water from below so the seeds are not displaced. Maintain moisture without leaving the mix waterlogged; Minnesota Extension describes gentle watering for small seeds in its general indoor seed-starting guide.
  4. Provide warmth and wait. Ohio State gives 65 to 70°F and about 10 to 15 days as germination guidance. Sonoma County Master Gardeners also report a 10-to-15-day window. These are recommendations, not guarantees; conditions and seed lots can affect how quickly seedlings appear.

Ohio State’s detailed instructions are in its mint guide.

Light for indoor mint seedlings

Once seedlings emerge, give them bright light so they grow sturdily rather than becoming thin and stretched. UC Master Gardeners of Santa Clara County advise either six hours of bright window light or 12 to 16 hours of supplemental cool-white fluorescent or LED light for indoor mint; see their mint guidance. A sunny south- or west-facing window is also a general indoor-herb recommendation from University of Maryland Extension; in winter or a dim room, supplemental light can help.

Transplanting seedlings into pots

Move seedlings once they are established and large enough to handle without damaging them. Choose a container with drainage holes and use potting mix. For indoor mint, Ohio State recommends a pot at least 8 to 10 inches deep, providing room for roots. That depth advice is for indoor growing.

If growing mint outdoors and using a pot as a barrier against spread, University of Maryland Extension recommends a container about 12 to 16 inches in diameter. This is a different measurement for a different purpose; it is not interchangeable with the indoor depth recommendation. See Maryland Extension’s mint guidance.

Keeping mint contained and healthy

Mint spreads by rhizomes and runners, so a pot is a practical way to keep it from taking over a garden bed. Check around the container for escaping stems, particularly if the pot sits directly on soil. Keep the root zone moist but not soggy. Pinch or harvest stems regularly to encourage bushier growth; UC IPM and Iowa State Extension both discuss containment and regular harvesting in their mint guidance.
