To grow herbs at home, choose plants suited to your available light and space, use pots with drainage holes and loose potting mix, and water when the soil begins to dry rather than on a fixed schedule. A bright window may be enough for some herbs; others need stronger sunlight or supplemental grow lighting.
Choose herbs that fit your home and cooking
Start with the herbs you will actually use, then check their light needs and mature size against the space you have. Penn State Extension suggests chives, basil, and cilantro as indoor options. Container herbs listed by University of Illinois Extension include parsley, Greek oregano, rosemary, marjoram, bush basil, thyme, chives, and summer savory. These are examples, not a universal ranking: some herbs need more light or root room than a small indoor pot can provide.
When comparing candidates, consider whether a plant is annual or perennial, how quickly its container may dry, its mature root and plant size, and whether it can stay outdoors in your local climate. The Penn State Extension guide to growing herbs indoors discusses differences in indoor suitability and light tolerance.
Set up containers for drainage
Use a container with drainage holes and loose, well-drained potting mix. Drainage lets excess water escape; without it, the mix can remain soggy and threaten roots. Place an indoor pot where drainage water can be caught or emptied, rather than leaving the plant standing in water.

Both the University of Illinois Extension container-herb guidance and Penn State recommend drainage for container-grown herbs. Check the plant’s expected size when selecting a pot, especially for herbs with larger root systems.
Give herbs enough light
Light is often the limiting factor indoors. University of Minnesota Extension says most herbs need at least six hours of direct sunlight daily outdoors and recommends about 12 hours of artificial light per day for indoor herbs. Penn State notes that needs vary by herb: rosemary, thyme, and bay do best in direct sunlight, while some herbs tolerate lower light. A bright window can work when it provides enough light for the plant; if it does not, consider a supplemental grow light.

Seedlings started indoors are a separate case from established indoor herbs. Minnesota Extension recommends 14 to 16 hours of light daily for indoor-started seedlings, with lights positioned 4 to 6 inches above them and raised as they grow. Do not treat seedling lighting guidance as the schedule for every mature potted herb. See the University of Minnesota Extension guidance on growing herbs in home gardens for these recommendations.
Water according to soil moisture
Check the mix instead of watering by calendar. Minnesota Extension suggests checking indoor soil about half an inch below the surface. If it is still moist, wait; persistently wet soil encourages root rot, particularly indoors. Watering needs differ by herb: Penn State’s guidance distinguishes herbs that should dry slightly between waterings from basil, whose mix should not dry out completely.

For container herbs, Illinois Extension recommends watering until water begins to drain from the holes. Let excess water escape, and adjust how often you water for the herb, pot, weather, and indoor conditions. This approach supplies a thorough watering when needed without keeping roots constantly wet.
Feed lightly and follow the product label
Fertilizer recommendations differ, so there is no single interval that fits every herb and growing setup. Minnesota Extension recommends light feeding for container herbs and gives different intervals for indoor and outdoor containers. Penn State advises a low dose of water-soluble fertilizer every two weeks and cautions that more frequent feeding may negatively affect aroma and taste. Account for the herb, conditions, and fertilizer label rather than combining those schedules into one rule.

Pinch and harvest to keep plants productive
Pinching during the growing season can keep herbs bushy and compact. Remove dead or diseased leaves, and check indoor plants for pests such as aphids, spider mites, thrips, and whiteflies. These care recommendations and harvest guidance come from the University of Illinois Extension article on growing herbs in containers.
For annual leafy herbs, Illinois Extension recommends leaving 4 to 6 inches of shoots when harvesting. For perennial herbs, take a lighter harvest by removing only the top third. Harvest leafy herbs when their leaf quality is at its best, and use species-specific guidance when a plant’s growth habit calls for a different approach.

Adjust for indoor and outdoor conditions
Outdoor containers can receive stronger sun and experience greater seasonal temperature changes than indoor pots; they may also dry faster. Before moving an herb outdoors or leaving it there, consider local climate and exposure as well as the plant’s needs. Indoors, reassess placement if growth is weak or light is limited. Watering and light are not fixed properties of a pot: they depend on the plant, container, location, and conditions around it.
