Clear plastic mulch generally warms soil more than black plastic; black plastic also suppresses weeds. Row covers protect young plants from cold, while sunny sites and raised beds can help soil warm earlier. There is no single temperature target or warming method that works for every crop and garden.
Check soil temperature before planting
Use a soil thermometer near the planting area rather than relying on the calendar or daytime air temperature. If you are using a regional soil-temperature map that does not cover your location, the University of Minnesota Extension advises measuring 2–4 inches below the surface. Follow local guidance for the crop you plan to grow.
Thresholds depend on the crop and conditions. Oregon State University Extension’s Oregon guidance says warm-weather plants need soil of at least 60°F and that tomatoes ideally prefer 65–70°F. Its tomato guide recommends soil at 65°F or warmer for best performance. These are examples for warm-season crops, not universal planting rules. OSU Extension’s planting guidance and tomato guide provide more detail.
Choose a soil-warming method
| Method | What it does | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear plastic mulch | Generally gives the greatest warming among the plastic films described by the cited extension sources. | When early warming is the priority and weeds can be managed separately. | Does not suppress weeds as effectively as black plastic; actual warming varies. |
| Black plastic mulch | Warms soil and suppresses weeds when laid in close contact with the soil. | When both warming and weed control matter. | Loose film or an uneven bed can reduce warming. |
| Row cover, low tunnel, or cloche | Protects plants from cold, wind, or frost and modifies growing conditions. | Protecting young plants or extending the season. | Needs monitoring and sometimes venting; covers may need to come off for pollination. |
| Raised bed and sunny site | Raised beds and lighter, well-drained soil tend to warm earlier than surrounding ground. | Planning a garden layout or renovating a bed. | No reliable universal temperature increase is established. |
| Organic mulch | Conserves moisture and can improve soil over time. | After soil has warmed around heat-loving crops. | OSU Extension says organic mulch does not warm soil and can delay spring warming. |
Use plastic mulch correctly
Clear plastic generally warms soil more than black plastic, but the reported increases are estimates from different extension publications and conditions—not promises for an individual garden. The University of Minnesota Extension reports about 5°F under black film and as much as 14°F under clear film. Utah State University Extension reports soil generally 10°F warmer under clear than black plastic and 15°F to 20°F warmer than bare soil. Oregon State University Extension describes a 10–15°F increase over a few days under clear polyethylene in cool-season areas. Do not average these figures: weather, soil, site exposure, moisture, film contact, and measurement conditions affect results. See the respective guidance from Minnesota, Utah, and Oregon State.

For black plastic, prepare a smooth bed and keep the film in close contact with the soil. OSU Extension calls close contact critical to warming. The University of Minnesota recommends laying plastic mulch one or two weeks before planting when possible; installing it on planting day may mean the warming benefit arrives later. Minnesota Extension’s installation guidance and the OSU tomato guide explain these points.
Protect young plants without overheating them
Row covers, low tunnels, and cloches can shield young plants from cold, wind, or frost. Check conditions beneath them as temperatures rise and vent or remove the covering when needed. OSU tomato and pepper guidance advises monitoring and venting or removing covers when temperatures exceed 90°F; needs vary with crop and setup. Covers can also block pollinators, so remove them during bloom for melons, squash, and cucumbers. Consult the OSU tomato guide, pepper guide, and vegetable gardening guide.

Plan around the bed and soil
Where you place a bed can help: choose a sunny, wind-protected location when possible. Raised beds and lighter, well-drained soils tend to warm earlier than heavier or poorly drained ground, but the difference depends on the site and does not translate into a dependable temperature increase. Oregon State University Extension discusses these site factors in its guidance on growing warm-season crops in cool-season areas.
Organic mulch has a different job from plastic warming film. It helps conserve moisture and can improve soil structure and nutrient content over time, but OSU Extension says it does not warm soil. For heat-loving crops, wait until the soil has warmed before applying it if your goal is to avoid slowing spring warming. See OSU’s vegetable gardening guidance.

A practical sequence for warming soil
- Identify the crop. Check local planting guidance for its soil-temperature needs; do not assume one threshold applies to every seed or transplant.
- Measure near the planting area. Use a soil thermometer and take readings at the depth recommended for the crop or local guidance. Where the Minnesota soil-temperature map does not cover your area, its extension guidance suggests 2–4 inches below the surface.
- Select the method. Choose clear plastic for stronger warming where weeds can be handled separately, or black plastic when weed suppression is also important. Consider covers for protecting young plants, and site or bed changes when planning the garden.
- Prepare and install plastic mulch. Smooth the bed, keep black film in close contact with the soil, and, if possible, install plastic one or two weeks before planting.
- Monitor covered plants. Check temperatures and vent or remove row covers, tunnels, or cloches as conditions require. Remove covers during bloom when pollination by insects is needed.
- Apply organic mulch later. Once soil around heat-loving crops has warmed, use organic mulch for moisture conservation and longer-term soil benefits.
