Keep an outdoor fountain cleaner by removing debris, scrubbing visible algae or biofilm from compatible surfaces, refilling it as the manufacturer allows, and keeping the pump circulating regularly. Clean sooner when the water turns cloudy, smells foul, or has visible algae, biofilm, or debris. The right schedule and any treatment depend on the fountain’s size and design—and on whether fish, plants, pets, birds, or other wildlife can reach the water.
Clean the fountain with a simple routine
- Switch off the pump. Unplug or turn it off before handling the fountain, and follow the maker’s safety instructions. Check the manual before removing or cleaning the pump.
- Remove leaves and loose debris. Clear the basin and, if the design allows, inspect the pump intake and filter according to the manufacturer’s directions.
- Scrub visible growth. Brush algae or biofilm from surfaces that can tolerate scrubbing. Kansas State University Extension recommends scrubbing algae from disappearing fountains; use a nonabrasive brush if appropriate for the fountain’s finish. Kansas State University Extension’s disappearing-fountain guidance offers an example.
- Rinse and refill as appropriate. Follow the manual on rinsing and refilling, taking care not to send debris or cleaning residue into surrounding planting or wildlife areas. Restore circulation when the fountain is ready.
- Check the water level and circulation. Top off as needed. In a disappearing fountain, the reservoir may be hidden, so the water level can be less obvious than in an open basin.
CDC advises running decorative fountains at least daily to avoid prolonged idle periods. This is public-health guidance for decorative fountains, not a substitute for the maker’s operating instructions. CDC decorative-fountain guidance also says to clean promptly when algae, biofilm, cloudy water, foul odor, or visible debris appears.
How often should you clean an outdoor fountain?
There is no single schedule that fits every garden fountain. Fountain design, water volume, and environmental conditions affect how quickly debris and biofilm build up. Inspect regularly and clean whenever visible growth or debris appears, or when water becomes cloudy or smells foul.
For context, CDC’s January 3, 2025 decorative-fountain module gives these routine sediment and biofilm cleaning intervals for managed decorative fountains:

| Water volume | CDC routine interval | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Under 5 gallons | Weekly | CDC decorative-fountain control recommendation; clean sooner if biofilm or debris is visible. |
| 5–25 gallons | Monthly | CDC decorative-fountain control recommendation; conditions and design affect maintenance needs. |
| Over 25 gallons | Routinely, as indicated by water-quality measurements | CDC decorative-fountain control recommendation for managed systems. |
These intervals are not a universal lawn-and-garden schedule. CDC’s managed-system guidance also discusses monitoring parameters such as temperature and disinfectant residual at least weekly and maintaining specified disinfectant levels. Do not turn those recommendations into improvised chemical-dosing instructions for a small fountain that birds or other wildlife may visit. Follow the fountain maker’s instructions and applicable local guidance.
How to manage algae without choosing the wrong treatment
Sunlight can encourage algae in a small recirculating bubbler, so some growth may return even after cleaning. Start with physical removal and a regular inspection routine. If considering an algaecide, check that its current label explicitly permits the intended fountain and use, follow its directions exactly, and confirm compatibility with the fountain materials and any animals or plants that may be exposed.

- Fountain Algae Control Solution 8-Ounce Bottle. Also available in 32 oz. and 64 oz. bottles. DO NOT USE WITH FISH.
- Effectively eliminates green water algae, string and hair algae, blanketweed algae and others. Non-hazardous, non-staining, and non-foaming when used as directed.
- Controls green water to keep pond water clean and clear in ornamental ponds and water gardens.
- Use only as directed to keep water safe for pond plants, surrounding wildlife and pets. Not safe for fish.
- Dose every three days until algae is controlled and then treat weekly. Maintain by using .75 oz. of product per 1,000 gallons of water every 5 days.
| Approach | When it may fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Manual cleaning | A practical first step, especially when water is accessible to wildlife or chemical compatibility is uncertain. | Use a brush and cleaning method compatible with the surface; remove debris and rinse as the fountain manual allows. |
| Algaecide | Only when the product label permits the specific fountain use and the exposure situation is suitable. | Read the current label, dosage, precautions, and restrictions for fish, plants, pets, birds, and other wildlife. Do not assume products are interchangeable or that “pet-safe” means safe for every species. |
An EPA-hosted label for one product, Algae Fix, dated September 20, 2018, directs users to start with a clean fountain, scrub away algae and dirt, rinse and refill, use the stated dose, and not overdose. That label is product-specific and dated; verify the current label before use. EPA-hosted Algae Fix label.
Older Ask Extension advice distinguishes fountains without plants or fish from those with aquatic life, but it is not a universal treatment recipe. More recent Extension responses about wildlife-accessible ponds and fountains underscore that product safety cannot be assumed without label information; in those settings, manual removal and reducing sources of nutrients are defensible starting points. - FOUNTAIN ALGAE CONTROL – PondBliss Algecide cleans out and prevents algae growth, restoring color and clarity color to fountains and small ponds.
- EFFECTIVE ALGAECIDE – Removes the most common green algae: string, hair, filamentous, chara, blanketweed and planktonic. Works quickly and see results within 3 to 4 weeks of treatment.
- CLARIFIES AND MAINTAINS – PondBliss Algeacide is an easy to use solution that reduce your fountain and pond maintenance, by preventing algae growth and reducing water cleaning cycles. Spend more time enjoying your water features instead of maintaining them!
- NOT FOR BIRDS OR PETS - PondBliss Fountain Algaecide and Clarifier formula is an EPA registered algaecide that is safe when used properly diluted and used as directed. However, as a precaution, we do not recommend for use in fountains or ponds that may be used by birds or pets.
- ONE YEAR FOUNTAIN TREATMENT - 8oz bottle provides full year of treatment for a up to 50 gallon fountain when used weekly. A great value all in a single bottle!
Take extra care when animals can reach the water
If birds drink from the fountain, or pets, fish, plants, frogs, tadpoles, or other wildlife may contact the water, treat chemical compatibility as a central decision—not an afterthought. A product described informally as “pet-safe” does not establish safety for every species or situation. When the current label does not clearly cover the intended fountain and exposure, avoid adding the product and use manual cleaning instead.
Do not apply a pesticide or algaecide contrary to its label, and do not assume a treatment suitable for a fish-free feature is suitable for a planted or wildlife-accessible one. Ask Extension responses about a pond with frogs and tadpoles and a backyard fountain illustrate why species and label details matter; they do not establish a general product-safety rule. Ask Extension wildlife and fountain guidance.

Understand the health guidance for managed fountains
CDC notes that decorative fountains produce aerosols and identifies sediment and biofilm, temperature, water age, and disinfectant residual as factors that can affect Legionella growth. It advises against placing decorative fountains in areas intended for people at increased risk of Legionnaires’ disease, such as healthcare facilities. For public, indoor, or otherwise managed fountains, CDC recommends a water-management program rather than relying on a casual household cleaning routine.
Clear-looking water does not prove that a fountain is microbiologically safe. CDC’s numerical disinfectant and operational recommendations address managed decorative-fountain water systems; they are not a universal backyard recipe, particularly where wildlife can drink from or inhabit the water. Follow the fountain manufacturer’s maintenance directions and consult the relevant local authority for a managed installation. CDC decorative-fountain module, updated January 3, 2025.
