How to Grow Asparagus That Produces for Decades

A long-lived asparagus bed starts with a sunny, well-drained site, patient establishment, and healthy fern growth after harvest.

To keep asparagus producing for many years, give it a permanent, sunny, well-drained bed; let crowns establish before harvesting; and leave healthy fern growth in place after the harvest season. With suitable conditions and care, an asparagus planting may produce for 10 to 15 years or longer, though its lifespan is not guaranteed.

Choose a permanent, sunny site

Asparagus is a long-lived perennial, so choose a location you can leave undisturbed. Pick a spot with at least eight hours of sun and good drainage, away from trees and shrubs that could shade the bed or compete for water and nutrients. Maryland and Colorado State Extension both recommend at least eight hours of sun, though local climate and growing conditions still matter.

Prepare the soil before planting. Asparagus does best in loose, deep, fertile, well-drained soil. Work well-composted organic matter into the bed; where soil is poor, organic matter or a cover crop can help improve it before planting. Avoid using a universal fertilizer recipe: soil and regional recommendations differ. See Colorado State University Extension’s home-garden asparagus guidance and UNH Cooperative Extension’s asparagus fact sheet.

Choose crowns and plan the layout

Crowns or seed

Healthy one-year-old crowns are a practical way to start a home bed and reach harvest sooner than with seed. Choose plump crowns with viable buds and discard any with rotten roots. Seed-grown plants generally need an additional year before the comparable harvest schedule.

Variety and spacing

Consider varieties suited to your region and their disease resistance. All-male hybrids are a useful option: male plants do not produce seeds, so they avoid the volunteer seedlings that can arise from female plants. They are not automatically the best choice everywhere, so compare local adaptation as well. Maryland Extension’s home-garden guidance and University of Illinois Extension’s asparagus overview discuss these considerations.

Leave room for the bed to mature. Recommendations commonly put crowns about 12 to 18 inches apart; UC guidance uses about 12 inches between plants and 4 to 5 feet between rows, while Virginia Tech recommends 15 to 18 inches between crowns. These are regional recommendations, not one universal layout. Planting depth also varies with soil texture: Iowa State recommends adjusting depth for lighter or heavier soils, and Virginia Tech notes that depth can affect spear size and number even when total yield is not affected in its cited research. Follow local extension advice for your soil and climate. See UC Master Gardener Program’s asparagus guidance, Virginia Cooperative Extension’s asparagus guidance and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s planting guidance.

Give the bed time before harvesting

A cautious schedule is to leave the bed unharvested during the first season after planting crowns, allow two full seasons for establishment, and begin with a light harvest in the third year. Some extension schedules allow a light crop in year two; delaying longer gives the crowns and roots more time to build reserves. Virginia Cooperative Extension’s 2026 page summary reports that research plots first harvested one year after crown planting had 23% lower cumulative yield after five years than plots first harvested two years after planting. That is a specific reported comparison, not a prediction for every garden.

After the bed is established, harvest for a limited season, then stop in time for the remaining spears to grow into ferns. Harvest timing varies by region and planting vigor, so use local guidance rather than a fixed number of weeks. Spears around 6 to 8 inches are commonly recommended. Snap them by hand or cut near the soil surface with a sharp knife; cutting deeply risks damaging crown buds or other emerging spears. For regional examples, see Virginia Cooperative Extension and UNH Cooperative Extension.

Keep the ferns to build next year’s crop

Fern growth after harvest is essential to future production. The foliage photosynthesizes and helps the plant store food in its crown and roots, which support the following spring’s spears. As UNH Cooperative Extension explains, “The number of vigorous spears in the spring depends upon the amount of food produced and stored in the crown during the preceding summer and fall.”

Leave healthy ferns in place until they are fully dead; removing them early can reduce the reserves available for the next crop. When to remove dead foliage depends on local conditions. Keep the bed weeded, especially before spears emerge, and pull weeds during production where possible so cultivation does not injure crowns or spears. Water and feed during fern growth as needed, following regional recommendations rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule. See University of Missouri Extension’s asparagus guidance for further explanation of the perennial growth cycle.

Protect plant health and set realistic expectations

Asparagus beetles, rust, and Fusarium crown and root rot are among the problems identified by extension sources. Healthy planting stock, suitable varieties, good drainage, and sanitation help support a productive bed. If a pest or disease appears, check local extension guidance and product labels before choosing a treatment; the right response depends on the problem and location.

Longevity figures are estimates, not guarantees. UC Master Gardener Program and Maryland Extension describe plantings lasting 10 to 15 years or longer. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says a planting in a favorable site with proper care should produce good crops for 15 to 20 years. Poor drainage, shade, competition, premature harvesting, or loss of healthy fern growth can shorten a bed’s productive life.
