For a healthy ZZ plant, give it bright, indirect light, a pot with drainage, and a thorough watering only after the potting medium has dried. Its rhizomes store water, so it tolerates dry periods; constantly wet soil is a bigger risk than an occasional missed watering. “Aroid palm” is a common name: the plant is an aroid, not a true palm.
What a ZZ plant needs
The ZZ plant, Zamioculcas zamiifolia, is a tropical aroid with fleshy, water-storing rhizomes beneath the soil. This storage helps it withstand dry spells, but does not make it immune to root or rhizome rot in soggy soil. Its slow growth and tolerance of lower light make it a practical indoor plant, provided its container drains well.
Where to place it
Bright, indirect light is best
Place the plant near a bright window where sunlight is filtered or indirect. ZZ plants tolerate low natural light and fluorescent-lit rooms, but typically grow more slowly there. Strong direct sun can scorch or discolor foliage, including whitening, yellowing, or browning. See NC State Extension’s ZZ plant guide and Iowa State Extension’s care advice.
UF/IFAS reports that ZZ plants in interiorscapes grew and produced leaves under 25 foot-candles of light for more than a year. That is a commercial interiorscape observation, not a guarantee that a plant at home will thrive at that light level. UF/IFAS commercial production guidance provides that context.

How to water without causing rot
Do not rely on a fixed weekly calendar. Water thoroughly, let excess water drain away, then wait until the potting medium has dried before watering again. Empty any water left in the saucer or decorative outer pot. The right interval varies with light, temperature, pot size, and season.
Extension examples illustrate that variation: Iowa State says watering every 7–14 days is usually fine in many cases, while Clemson suggests one to two waterings monthly after the medium has completely dried. These are examples, not a universal schedule. Check the soil and adjust to your conditions. UF/IFAS reports that plants in interior-care conditions survived 3 to 4 months without watering; this is a survival observation, not a recommended interval for home care.

- STRIKING LIVE HOUSEPLANT: The Everlasting ZZ features bold, upright architectural foliage that transitions in color as it matures, making it a dynamic, eye-catching addition to any modern home or office decor
- LOW MAINTENANCE CARE: This indoor plant is incredibly resilient and drought-tolerant. It thrives on minimal intervention, making it the perfect choice for busy plant parents, beginners, or frequent travelers
- SIMPLE WATERING NEEDS: Extremely forgiving of skipped waterings. Simply water about once every 2 weeks with 1 cup of water, allowing the well-draining soil mix to dry out completely between watering routines
- LIGHT REQUIREMENTS: Performs best in spots with medium, indirect sunlight (about 3–5 hours daily), but is highly adaptable and can easily tolerate lower light conditions common in rooms or office spaces
- FARM FRESH PLANT DELIVERY: Professionally packed and delivered fresh from our farm. Measures approximately 10 inches tall from the bottom of the pot to the top of the plant, arriving in a stylish 6-inch self-watering decorative planter
The key preventable problem is too much water combined with poor drainage. A pot without drainage holes can trap excess water around the rhizomes. For more on the plant’s water needs, consult Clemson Cooperative Extension and UF/IFAS houseplant care guidance.
Choose a draining pot and suitable soil
Use a container with drainage holes and a well-draining potting medium. UF/IFAS describes peat- or bark-based potting soil as suitable, and Clemson recommends a coarse, well-draining mix. The guidance supports prioritizing drainage; it does not establish a need for a branded or specialized recipe.

Temperature and fertilizer
Keep it warm
Protect the plant from cold drafts and chilly locations. Clemson advises keeping it above 60°F. UF/IFAS notes reduced growth and possible injury below 50°F, and gives 65–90°F as a tropical preference. These differing thresholds support avoiding cold, but do not establish one exact minimum that applies in every setting.
Feed sparingly
Because ZZ plants grow slowly, fertilizer is optional and should be used sparingly. Extension advice ranges from one or two feedings during active growth to about twice a year with a balanced fertilizer. Follow the fertilizer label rather than applying extra to force faster growth.

How to propagate a ZZ plant
Divide a plant with multiple rhizomes
Division is the more practical option when the plant has distinct rhizomes that can be separated. This gives you a section of the existing plant rather than waiting for a new rhizome to form from a leaf cutting. Handle the roots and rhizomes carefully, then pot each division in a draining container with well-draining medium.
Grow a new plant from a leaf cutting
Leaf propagation works, but it takes patience. The University of Connecticut Extension advises letting the cut end callous briefly, then placing the leaf stalk in moist soilless medium in indirect light. Rhizomes may form in about a month under greenhouse conditions; in household conditions, formation can take up to nine months. Even after that, growth may be slow and occur in spurts. See UConn Extension’s propagation guidance.

Safety around children and pets
Do not let people or pets chew or ingest a ZZ plant. Aroids may contain calcium oxalate crystals that can irritate and damage soft tissues in the mouth and throat; NC State also lists gastrointestinal symptoms after consuming leaves in quantity. Keep the plant out of reach of children and animals that might chew it. For details, see UConn Extension and NC State Extension.
Quick Recap
What to watch for
- Yellowing, browning, or whitening leaves: Check whether the plant is receiving harsh direct sun or staying in wet soil.
- Persistently wet medium: Improve drainage and let the potting medium dry before watering again; excess moisture can lead to root or rhizome rot.
- Pests: Inspect leaves and stems periodically. NC State notes scale insects, and Illinois Extension recommends watching for common houseplant pests; Clemson reports no serious insect or disease problems, but that does not mean a plant cannot be affected. See Illinois Extension’s 2026 overview.
