How to Get Rid of Algae in Your Pond: Safe, Practical Steps

The right pond algae treatment depends on the growth form. Remove accessible mats, reduce nutrient and sediment inputs, and use extra caution with suspected harmful blooms or chemical treatments.

To get rid of pond algae, first identify what you are dealing with: stringy mats, suspended green water, and a potentially harmful bloom call for different responses. Remove accessible mats, reduce nutrient and sediment inputs to prevent recurrence, and treat aeration or barley straw as supporting or preventive measures—not quick cures. If a bloom may be harmful, avoid treating it as ordinary algae and get local expert guidance.

Identify the algae before choosing a treatment

“Algae” can mean several different growth forms. A method that helps with filamentous algae may not clear green water, and a suspected harmful bloom raises a separate safety concern. Penn State Extension describes management options for nuisance plants and algae in farm ponds, while Illinois Extension warns that some blooms may pose health risks.

  • Filamentous algae: Stringy growth that can form mats at the surface or attach to underwater surfaces. Physical removal and preventive measures such as barley straw are most relevant to this form.
  • Suspended green water: Tiny algae suspended through the water, rather than mats that can be lifted out. Removing visible mats will not address this condition.
  • Potentially harmful bloom: If you suspect a harmful bloom, do not assume it is harmless green water or apply a routine algaecide treatment. Seek advice from a local extension office or relevant public-health or environmental authority.

Appearance alone may not establish whether a bloom is harmful. Illinois Extension’s guidance is specific to the harmful-bloom situation discussed in its article, not a blanket rule for every pond: “Is pond algae toxic?” (August 9, 2020).

Choose an approach that fits the problem

Approach Best-supported role Limits and cautions
Reduce nutrient and sediment inputs Longer-term prevention when runoff, fertilizer, livestock, or other sources add nutrients or sediment. Find and address the source; this may not clear existing mats quickly.
Physical removal Removing accessible filamentous mats or floating nuisance growth. Labor-intensive; effectiveness depends on access and growth form. Remove collected material from the pond rather than leaving it to decay in the water.
Aeration A supporting pond-management measure. Not a stand-alone algae cure if nutrient inputs continue.
Barley straw Prevention of filamentous algae growth. Does not eliminate existing algae cells; results are variable, and excess straw decomposing in the pond can reduce oxygen.
Algaecide Potential targeted control when the product, pond conditions, and intended use are appropriate. Check the label, water uses, oxygen risks, bloom context, and local rules. Get local advice if uncertain.

Remove accessible mats and reduce the sources feeding growth

Remove what you can reach

For stringy mats or floating nuisance growth, a pond rake or algae-removal net can physically take biomass out of the water. Penn State Extension includes mechanical control among management options. Collect and dispose of the removed material away from the pond so it does not decompose in the water.

Limit nutrient and sediment inputs

Recurring growth often signals favorable conditions in the pond or its watershed. Iowa State University Extension recommends limiting nutrient and sediment inputs and establishing a vegetated buffer. Penn State Extension also identifies nutrient pollution, sediment, shallow water, and stagnant water among conditions associated with nuisance growth.

Look for sources that can be reduced, such as fertilizer or manure runoff and eroding soil entering the pond. A vegetated buffer can help intercept runoff before it reaches the water. Addressing inputs is preventive: it does not necessarily remove algae that is already present.

Use aeration as support, not as an algae cure

Aeration can be one part of pond management, but it does not remove the nutrient source that may be feeding algae. Purdue University Extension puts the limitation plainly in “Controlling Algae in Irrigation Ponds”: “Aeration alone is not considered a viable algae control method, especially if phosphorus continues to be introduced into the pond.”

Understand what barley straw can—and cannot—do

Barley straw is a preventive option for filamentous algae, not a dependable treatment for a bloom already present. The method is intended to inhibit new growth rather than eliminate existing algae cells, and evidence from U.S. research has not been consistently positive, according to University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources Cooperative Extension’s Barley Straw for Algae Control resource.

Penn State Extension gives two to three bales per surface acre of pond as a common application range for filamentous algae management—not a universal prescription. Check the guidance for your pond and the instructions for the particular product or method you use. Too much straw decomposing in the water can lower oxygen and harm fish. For additional guidance, see Penn State Extension’s Barley Straw for Algae Control and University of Maryland Extension’s Algae Control with Barley Straw (updated November 28, 2022).

Take care with algaecides and suspected harmful blooms

An algaecide is not a universal answer. The appropriate product and treatment depend on the algae, the pond’s conditions and uses, and the product label. Killing large amounts of algae can also create oxygen concerns as the material decays. Follow label directions and check applicable local rules before treatment.

In Pennsylvania, Penn State Extension notes that a permit is required for certain herbicide applications in Commonwealth waters. That requirement is specific to Pennsylvania and should not be assumed to describe the rules elsewhere. For a suspected harmful bloom, Illinois Extension advises against algaecide use in the situation its article discusses, warning that it could prompt a high release of toxins at once. If the bloom’s identity or safety is uncertain, consult local authorities or an extension specialist rather than treating it as routine pond algae.

A practical order of operations

  1. Identify the growth. Distinguish accessible stringy mats from suspended green water, and treat a suspected harmful bloom as a safety concern.
  2. Remove accessible mats. Use a rake or net where practical and remove the collected growth from the pond.
  3. Look for inputs. Check where runoff, fertilizer, manure, or eroding soil may be carrying nutrients or sediment into the pond; reduce those inputs and consider a vegetated buffer.
  4. Choose support or prevention carefully. Aeration may support management but will not solve continuing nutrient inputs. Barley straw is preventive for filamentous algae, has variable results, and should not be used as an immediate-kill treatment.
  5. Get local guidance before chemical treatment. Confirm that the product is appropriate for the pond and its uses, follow its label, and check local rules—especially if a harmful bloom is possible.
