For flowers that last, harvest during the cool part of the day, cut each variety at its appropriate opening stage, and place stems in water promptly. A clean cut, a clean container, and cool conditions after harvest help protect their vase life.
Choose the right time and bloom stage
Flowers are often best hydrated in the cool morning, so early morning is a reliable time to harvest. Evening can also work when it is cool; the useful rule is to avoid the heat of the day. Iowa State University Extension recommends harvesting near sunrise, while University of California guidance also identifies early morning or evening as suitable periods.
Check the ideal opening stage for the flower you are cutting. Some varieties last longer when harvested in bud, while others need to be more open to develop properly after cutting. The University of Missouri Extension offers half to three-quarters open as a general starting point, not a rule for every species. If you do not know the variety’s needs, identify it before relying on that general guideline.
Prepare tools and water before cutting
Take a clean, sharp knife, shears, or clippers and a clean bucket containing water into the garden. Sharp tools make a clean cut; dull or dirty blades can crush stems or introduce contamination. Bypass pruning shears or floral snips are useful options when they make a clean cut, but any suitable sharp, clean tool will do.

Cut, hydrate, and prepare the stems
- Cut longer than you think you need. If you have not settled on the arrangement length, leave extra stem to trim later.
- Make a clean cut. Use the sharp tool without crushing the stem.
- Put each stem in water quickly. Carrying a water-filled bucket helps avoid leaving fresh cuts dry while you gather the rest.
- Remove leaves that would sit below the vase’s waterline. Submerged foliage decays and can foul the water.
- Before arranging, use a clean vase and make a fresh cut at the base of each stem. A fresh cut and prompt hydration are common conditioning steps; recommendations differ on details such as recutting underwater and water temperature, so neither needs to be treated as mandatory for every home arrangement.
Keep flowers fresh after arranging
Use commercial floral preservative if you have it, following the product label. Iowa State Extension recommends commercial preservative over common household mixtures. If none is available, clean water without additives is a reasonable alternative.
Keep the arrangement cool and away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and drafts. If the water becomes cloudy or starts to smell, replace it and follow the flower-food directions when refreshing the arrangement.

Holding flowers before arranging
If you need to store cut flowers before arranging, Iowa State Extension gives 40–60°F as a short-term holding range and 33–35°F for longer-term storage beyond a day or two. These are that extension publication’s recommendations, not universal requirements for every flower or household refrigerator. Keep the stems hydrated and avoid freezing them.
