A simple stacked garden is a freestanding tower of planting containers held around a central support. To build one, choose a level, sunny spot; secure compatible pots to a sturdy rod or pipe; make sure every tier drains; then fill and plant each container. The main construction challenge is keeping the tower stable under the extra weight of wet growing medium while ensuring every tier gets light and water.

What kind of stacked garden are you making?

This guide covers a compact tower of pots arranged vertically around a central support. That is one kind of vertical garden—not the same build as stacked raised beds or a wall-mounted pocket garden. UF/IFAS describes greenhouse systems in which pots sit on a central rod or pipe; the same basic arrangement can be adapted for a home garden, with care taken over stability, light and drainage. UF/IFAS: Production Systems—Florida Greenhouse Vegetable Production Handbook, Vol. 3

Plan the site and plants before you build

Start by checking how much direct sun reaches the intended location and choosing compact crops suited to that light, your local season and the available pot size. Leafy vegetables, herbs and strawberries are examples grown in vertical or container systems, but the best choices depend on local conditions. UC ANR’s guidance for Central Valley container gardens says most vegetables need 6–8 hours of sun; treat that as regional advice, not a rule for every crop or climate. A tower that is too tall can shade its lower pots. Choose a location where the tiers can receive useful light, and avoid a height that leaves the bottom plants persistently shaded. If the design allows, you can rotate the tower to even out exposure.

Choose the containers and support

Use pots that fit securely on or around a central rod or pipe and that will not tip when filled and watered. The support and its base must remain stable with the full, wet assembly—not just when the tower is empty. There is no universal rod diameter, pot count or load rating for this kind of DIY tower; those depend on the containers, support design and site. Do not assume a slender stake or loose-fitting pots will safely carry a tall stack.

Account for the weight of saturated growing medium and mature plants. Iowa State Extension emphasizes sturdy construction for tabletop planters because soil and plants become heavy when watered. Its suggested tabletop-planter dimensions—36–48 inches wide and 30–33 inches high—are for accessible tabletop planters, not specifications for a stacked tower. Build and plant the tower

  1. Set the location. Put the tower on a level surface that can support the wet load. Ensure water draining from the lowest pot will not pool beneath the structure or leave it sitting in standing water.
  2. Assemble the support and pots. Secure the central rod or pipe and fit each container so it cannot shift or tip. Check that the finished stack is stable before adding growing medium.
  3. Verify drainage. Use containers with drainage holes. Check that water can pass through the tiers and escape from the bottom pot. Container plants need drainage; otherwise, excess water can collect around roots. UC ANR: Container Vegetable Gardening in the Central Valley
  4. Fill with container mix. Use a lightweight, well-draining mix made for containers rather than dense garden soil, which is generally too heavy for pots. UNH Extension also recommends container growing media and drainage for vegetables grown in containers. UNH Extension: Growing Vegetables In Containers
  5. Plant each tier. Choose compact plants suited to each pot’s size and the site’s light and season. Leave enough room for plants to mature rather than crowding every tier with starts.
  6. Water and inspect the whole stack. Water gradually, then check the upper, middle and lower pots. In UF/IFAS’s greenhouse system, drainage from an upper pot flows into successive pots; a soil-filled home tower can also distribute water unevenly, so do not assume all tiers are equally moist.

Maintain light, moisture and stability

  • Check moisture by tier. Upper, middle and lower containers may not retain the same amount of water. Check each one rather than relying on the surface of the top pot as a guide.
  • Watch light at the bottom. If the lower tiers are shaded, rotate the tower if possible or adjust its position. Tall stacks can block light from lower pots.
  • Recheck the structure after watering. The assembly is heavier when its growing medium is saturated. Look for shifting pots, a leaning support or an unstable base and address the problem before continuing to water or adding plants.
  • Refresh fast-growing crops as needed. UNH Extension suggests new plantings every 3–4 weeks for some fast-growing herbs and greens; this is a succession-planting interval for those crops, not a universal schedule for every plant.

When a ready-made tower may be simpler

A purpose-built tower planter can reduce the work of fitting containers to a DIY support, but it still needs a stable, level location and attention to water and light. Compare options on whether the filled tower remains stable when wet, how each tier drains, how much planting volume it provides, how easily you can water and reach every tier, and whether the lower pots receive enough light. A specialized branded product is not required for a basic tower.

How this differs from other vertical gardens

Stacked beds, trellises, hanging containers and wall-mounted pocket systems use different structures and have different support and watering needs. UC ANR’s vertical-garden overview describes approaches including trellises, hanging containers and hydroponic walls; those should not be treated as interchangeable with a pot tower.
