To make your own terrarium, choose an open or closed clear container to suit your plants, add an appropriate growing medium, plant a few compatible species, and moisten the soil lightly. Keep the finished terrarium in bright, indirect light. The key is matching the plants to the humidity—not treating every terrarium as the same kind of miniature garden.

Choose an open or closed terrarium

Decide on the container style before buying plants. A covered container holds humidity; an open container allows more airflow and stays drier. Mixing plants with different light and moisture needs makes care difficult, so choose one style and a compatible group of plants.

Feature Closed terrarium Open terrarium
Conditions Higher humidity; moisture is retained Lower humidity; more airflow
Plant direction Small humidity-tolerant plants such as ferns, mosses and fittonia Many succulents and cacti
Container Clear vessel with a lid or cover Wide opening or no lid
Care emphasis Avoid excess water; vent if condensation stays heavy Water as needed for the drier plant selection

These plant suggestions are broad rather than guarantees for every variety. Check the needs of the plants you choose, and group plants with similar light and moisture requirements. Penn State Extension’s closed-terrarium guide, Iowa State University Extension’s terrarium instructions, and Oregon State Extension’s terrarium guidance discuss these distinctions.

Gather a container, plants and growing medium

Pick a clear, easy-to-reach container

A clean glass or plastic jar, bowl or aquarium can work. Choose a clear vessel so light can reach the plants, and favor a wide opening: it is easier to plant, clean and prune than a narrow-necked container. Wash the container thoroughly before you begin. A household container is enough; a special kit is not necessary.

  • REAL LIVE MOSS INCLUDED — Unlike kits built only around decorative or artificial materials, this terrarium set includes real live moss to bring natural texture and color into your finished arrangement. Follow the included care guidance to help the moss recover after shipping and maintain it as part of your terrarium.
  • LAYER, BUILD & PERSONALIZE — Arrange the included substrates, sand, gravel, moss and decorative accents to create depth, texture and your own miniature landscape. Mini tools help with placing and adjusting smaller details, making the building process part of the experience rather than simply displaying a finished product.
  • GLASS GLOBE DISPLAY — The clear glass globe keeps the miniature arrangement visible from multiple angles, while the coordinated wood base and metal frame create a finished display for desks, shelves, tables and other indoor spaces. The compact design turns the completed terrarium into part of your decor.
  • STAND OR HANG — Display the finished terrarium on its wood base or use the included hanging rope for another presentation option. The flexible format makes it easy to incorporate the finished piece into a desk, shelf, tabletop or other indoor display area.

Choose small plants that fit the space

For a closed terrarium, look for small, healthy, slow-growing plants that tolerate humid conditions. Ferns, mosses and fittonia (nerve plant) are examples. For an open terrarium, many succulents and cacti are more suitable than plants that need consistently moist air. Start with plants small enough to leave room for growth.

Use an appropriate growing medium

For a closed terrarium, use a low-fertility soilless potting mix, with enough depth for the plants’ roots. Horticultural charcoal appears in some terrarium methods, but it is not essential to every build. Decorative stones or figures are optional.

Advice differs on whether to put gravel or rocks beneath the soil. Iowa State describes gravel, pebbles or perlite as a place for excess water to collect; Penn State says a rock layer is not thought to improve drainage. Because a terrarium has no outlet for water, a bottom layer does not provide true drainage. Careful watering matters more.

Build the terrarium

  1. Clean the vessel. Wash and thoroughly rinse the container before adding plants or growing medium.
  2. Add the growing medium. For a closed terrarium, add low-fertility soilless mix deep enough to accommodate the roots. Do not rely on a layer of rocks to drain excess water out of the vessel.
  3. Set the plants in place. Arrange them with space between each plant and keep leaves from resting against the glass. This leaves room for growth and helps avoid leaves staying persistently wet.
  4. Moisten the soil lightly. Add enough water to moisten the growing medium without soaking it. Since water cannot drain out of the vessel, excess can collect at the bottom and contribute to root problems.
  5. Add optional decoration. Add stones or figures if you like, without crowding the plants.

Settle the moisture level and place it well

Keep the terrarium in bright, indirect light, away from direct sun. Sunlight through glass can heat a closed container excessively. Check the moisture and condensation periodically instead of following a fixed watering calendar: requirements vary with the container, plants, soil and light.

If a closed terrarium develops persistent heavy condensation, open the cover temporarily to let excess moisture escape, then close it again. Mississippi State University Extension’s closed-system guidance describes gradually adjusting a closed terrarium to establish a balanced moisture level.

Maintain it as the plants grow

  • Inspect the plants and growing medium periodically; water only when the medium needs it.
  • Vent the cover temporarily if condensation remains excessive.
  • Trim growth that crowds other plants or touches the glass.
  • Replace plants that outgrow the container.

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says many closed terrariums may need water every three to six months, but emphasizes that timing varies substantially with the soil, species and light. Treat that as a source-specific range, not a schedule to follow regardless of conditions. Its care guidance explains the variation.
