To make a gravel driveway that holds up, plan where water will go, prepare a stable subgrade, choose aggregate suited to your soil and vehicle loads, and place and shape the material so it sheds water. There is no single depth, aggregate mix, or layer count that suits every property; those choices depend on ground conditions, climate, traffic, local materials, and drainage.
1. Plan the route, use, and drainage
Mark the driveway alignment and its intended width, then consider how it will be used: occasional passenger-car access differs from frequent heavy-vehicle traffic. Note slopes, low spots, soft or wet ground, and places where water crosses the route or runs toward buildings and neighboring land.
Plan a safe destination for runoff before construction begins. Shape the finished surface and surrounding ground to direct water away from the driving area. Where runoff needs to be intercepted or diverted, a French drain may be an option; Washington State University Extension describes its use for diverting water around a driveway. A drainage trench needs a route to a suitable discharge point, not simply a place to collect water. See Washington State University Extension.
Check local requirements for driveway access, drainage, and construction before starting. Rules vary by location, and no jurisdiction-specific permit or approval requirement can be assumed without knowing where the driveway will be built.

#1 Best Overall
- 1.5 INCH CRUSHED LIMESTONE – Natural crushed limestone approximately 1.5 inches in size with an angular shape and gray, light gray and natural stone color variations.
- DRIVEWAYS & BASE MATERIAL – Angular crushed stone is useful for driveway areas, base layers, construction projects and other applications requiring durable aggregate.
- DRAINAGE & EROSION CONTROL – Well suited for drainage areas, runoff zones, French drain applications and erosion-control projects where larger crushed stone is needed.
- 40 LB SIZE FOR LARGER PROJECTS – More material for larger drainage areas, driveway repairs, landscape applications, erosion-control projects and other aggregate needs.
- REAL NATURAL LIMESTONE – Color, size, shape, markings and texture naturally vary. Crushed stone is angular rather than rounded, and individual pieces may vary around the approximate 1.5-inch size.
2. Prepare the site and subgrade
Clear the planned route and address unstable ground before placing aggregate. The subgrade—the soil beneath the driveway—must support the expected loads. Persistent saturation, weak soil, steep terrain, or regular heavy vehicles can make the work more demanding; seek local engineering or construction advice if conditions are uncertain.
Do not cover a wet or soft area with gravel and assume the problem is solved. Water in a weak roadbed can undermine performance. Identify whether the cause is surface runoff, poor drainage, or unsuitable soil, and resolve the underlying issue as part of the site preparation.

- This gravel has a variety of uses including landscape and garden decoration, drainage, and building walkways.
- Gravel can be used to surround flower beds, trees, and shrubs.
- Gravel can also be used to create pathways, driveways, and other outdoor flooring surfaces.
- Gravel can also be used to create pathways, driveways, and other outdoor flooring surfaces.
3. Decide whether the subgrade needs stabilization
Geotextile fabric or geogrid may help stabilize or separate the roadbed where soil is weak or wet, but neither is a required layer for every driveway. The Federal Highway Administration’s Gravel Roads Construction and Maintenance Guide says it may be cost effective to consider fabric or geogrid to stabilize a road, particularly in its discussion of wet or saturated roadbeds. That guidance concerns gravel roads; apply it to a private driveway only after considering the site’s soil, moisture, loads, and design. Read the FHWA guide.
Drainage measures are also site-dependent. FHWA notes that underdrains may not suit every soil and need an outlet that can discharge water without backflow. An underdrain is not a substitute for planning surface runoff, and adding a pipe without a workable outlet can leave water trapped rather than solve the problem.

- LARGE 2–3 INCH CRUSHED LIMESTONE Natural crushed limestone approximately 2–3 inches in size with angular shapes that create a substantial, durable aggregate for outdoor projects.
- DRAINAGE & EROSION CONTROL Large limestone is well suited for drainage areas, runoff zones, erosion-control applications and other projects where larger aggregate is needed.
- DRIVEWAYS, BASE LAYERS & CONSTRUCTION Useful for driveway and road-base applications, construction projects, stabilization areas and other projects requiring durable crushed stone.
- 40 LB SIZE FOR LARGER PROJECTS – Provides more material for drainage systems, erosion-control areas, driveway repairs, base layers and larger landscaping projects.
- REAL NATURAL LIMESTONE This is genuine crushed limestone, so individual stones naturally vary in exact size, shape, texture and shades of gray. Pieces are approximately 2–3 inches.
4. Choose aggregate and calculate the quantity
Ask local suppliers about durable aggregate gradations suitable for the subgrade, traffic, and local conditions. The material should be selected as part of a driveway structure, not just by appearance. A gravel-road manual published by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency covers surface gravel, gradation, thickness design methods, and quantity calculations; its road specifications are not a universal residential-driveway recipe. Use its principles alongside local supplier guidance or site-specific engineering advice. Read the gravel-road manual.
Estimate quantity from the planned area and the design recommended for the site, then confirm the calculation with the supplier. The amount needed varies with the driveway’s dimensions, chosen material, subgrade, and required structure. There is no established universal residential depth, aggregate blend, or number of layers to use in every case.

- #57 LIMESTONE / 3/4 INCH GRAVEL – Crushed limestone commonly known as #57 stone, approximately 3/4 inch in size with angular pieces for drainage, landscaping and home improvement projects.
- FRENCH DRAINS & DRAINAGE – Open spaces between the stones allow water to move through the aggregate, making #57 limestone a popular choice for French drains, drainage trenches and runoff areas.
- DRIVEWAYS & LANDSCAPING – Versatile crushed stone for driveway repairs, landscape projects, walkways, drainage areas, around the home and other outdoor DIY projects.
- 20 LB SIZE FOR MEDIUM PROJECTS – More material for drainage areas, French drains, landscaping, driveway repairs and other residential projects.
- NATURAL CRUSHED LIMESTONE – Genuine natural limestone with angular shapes and natural gray color variations. Exact stone size, shape, texture and coloration will vary.
5. Place, shape, and compact the aggregate
Build the driveway structure to the site-specific design, placing and compacting the aggregate in the planned sequence. Shape the finished driving surface to shed water away rather than letting it pond or run along the wheel paths. The necessary thickness and number of placements depend on soil strength and expected loading, so avoid copying a road specification as if it were a guaranteed driveway standard.
Equipment choices depend on the project and material. A plate compactor may be suitable for some residential work, but the appropriate tool and approach depend on the scale and conditions; the cited guides do not establish one machine or model for every job.

- MADE IN THE USA: Manufactured by McKinnon Materials in Tampa, Florida, with decades of experience in industrial coatings and decorative surfacing.
6. Inspect and maintain the driveway
After construction and during use, watch for standing water, rutting, displaced aggregate, and drainage that is clogged or backing up. These signs can indicate that water management, surface shape, or the roadbed needs attention. Correct the source of water problems rather than repeatedly adding aggregate over the symptom.
Reshape or replenish material as conditions require, and keep drainage paths clear so water can leave the driveway. The EPA-hosted gravel-road manual includes maintenance guidance, but the frequency and extent of upkeep for a private driveway depend on traffic, weather, material, and site conditions.
