Make a concrete patio feel intentional by coordinating its surface texture, color, pattern, and the planting and furnishings around it. For a new pour, settle those choices before placement; for an existing slab, start with its condition and choose compatible treatments. No single finish suits every yard: appearance, traction, climate, installation, and care all matter.
Start with the slab and the project stage
A new patio and an existing one call for different decisions. On a new pour, decide on the finish, color, decorative pattern, and joint layout before concrete is placed. Those choices affect the work sequence, and the surface treatment must be coordinated with placement and curing. The American Concrete Institute’s ACI PRC-310-19: Guide to Decorative Concrete covers these connected topics; ACI marks that 2019 guide as historical and notes a newer version is available, so it is a reference to decorative-concrete processes rather than current project-specific instructions.
For an existing patio, first inspect and clean the slab. Its condition and prior treatments affect whether staining, sealing, or another treatment is appropriate. Check compatibility and preparation requirements before applying anything; a finish that works during placement is not automatically suitable for concrete that has already cured.
Choose a finish for the look and the way the patio is used
Finish determines much of the patio’s visual character and underfoot texture. Compare options by appearance, traction, when they are applied, site and climate considerations, installation complexity, and maintenance. The sources do not establish one universally best choice.

| Finish | Look and texture | Project stage and practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Broomed | Simple, textured appearance. | Typically formed as the concrete is finished during placement. QUIKRETE describes broom finishing as one patio option; ask the installer how the planned texture suits the site and intended use. |
| Smooth steel-troweled | More even, refined surface. | Created during finishing of a new pour. Because a smooth surface can become more slippery when wet, consider exposure to rain and any planned sealer. |
| Seeded small aggregate or exposed aggregate | Aggregate is visible at the surface, giving a more natural, stone-like appearance and texture. | Requires coordination with placement and finishing. Confirm the selected aggregate and finish are appropriate for the site and desired underfoot feel. |
| Stamped, stenciled, engraved, or scored | Introduces deliberate pattern, repeated forms, or visual divisions. | These are decorative treatments that need to be planned with the layout and finish. Their installation requirements vary; establish the method and sequence with the contractor. |
| Overlay | Can add a new decorative surface over existing concrete. | Suitability depends on the existing slab and the overlay system. Check substrate preparation and product guidance rather than assuming every slab can receive one. |
QUIKRETE’s Building a Concrete Patio describes patio finishing and joint examples. For a broader overview of decorative processes and planning considerations, consult ACI’s guide and the Sika USA Building Solutions decorative-concrete section, which identifies product families such as texture systems and overlays.
Decide where color and pattern should come from
Color: integral, hardened, or applied after curing
Integral color and color hardeners are incorporated during placement; stains and dyes are used to color cured concrete. These are distinct approaches, not interchangeable versions of the same step. Choose based on whether the patio is new or already in place, the appearance you want, and the substrate’s condition. ACI’s decorative-concrete guide identifies these methods, while Sika lists integral colors and concrete stains among its product families.

- READY TO USE: Our ready-to-use concrete sealer can be applied to a properly cleaned and prepped surface with a roller or sprayer. One gallon covers up to 175-225 ft2/gallon. If you are looking for a concrete cleaner, consider the Armor MSC100 (sold separately).
- EASY TO MAINTAIN: This solvent-based concrete sealer is self-priming, making it easy to use, and easy to maintain. When it is time to reseal your concrete or pavers, simply apply a single coat of the concrete sealer to a clean and dry surface with a roller or sprayer. Within seconds, your concrete and pavers will be instantly refreshed.
On an existing slab, assess and prepare the surface as required by the chosen treatment. Stains and sealers depend on a compatible, properly prepared substrate, so follow the system’s instructions rather than selecting color by sample appearance alone.
Pattern: create structure without sacrificing necessary joints
Stamping, stenciling, engraving, decorative scoring, and borders can give a broad slab a more considered composition. A border can frame a seating area, while a repeated pattern can visually break up the surface. Plan decorative lines alongside functional control joints, not in place of them: QUIKRETE notes that larger patios need control joints and describes tooling them. Do not omit or conceal necessary joints for appearance; coordinate their placement with the overall design before the pour.

Make the slab part of the backyard
A patio reads as an outdoor room when its edges and surrounding elements relate to the hard surface. Concrete Network’s concrete patio design guide suggests planting to soften hardscape edges and highlights lighting and comfortable furniture as ways to make a patio more inviting. Adapt those ideas to your yard rather than treating them as fixed rules.
- Use planting along selected edges to transition from the firm slab to the garden.
- Choose outdoor furniture that suits how the patio will be used, with a layout that leaves practical paths across it.
- Use patio lighting to make the area more inviting after dark.
Choose sealer for protection, appearance, and traction
An outdoor sealer can help protect concrete from moisture, stains, fading, and wear, while also changing how the surface looks. The right choice depends on the concrete’s existing finish and the sheen you want. Concrete Network’s patio sealer guide describes acrylic sealers as common for decorative exterior flatwork and penetrating sealers as an option when a natural, non-film appearance is preferred.

- SUPERIOR PROTECTION: Our concrete sealer forms an invisible, filmless, hydrophobic barrier that shields concrete surfaces from water, salt, oil, stains, efflorescence, harsh weather, and other contaminants, ensuring long-lasting durability.
- WATER-REPELLENT: The waterproofer absorbs into unpainted and unsealed concrete surfaces to prevent damage from cracks caused by freeze-thaw cycles, water exposure, moisture, efflorescence, stains, and long-term deterioration.
- MULTI-PURPOSE USE: Ideal for indoor and outdoor surfaces, our concrete sealer protects the appearance of driveways, garage floors, pool decks, stamped concrete, walls, patios, walkways, and more with a natural, no-gloss finish.
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Drying within 1 hour at 75°F (24°C), this waterproofer covers up to 200 sq.ft./gallon, depending on surface porosity. Apply 2 flood coats with a handheld pump sprayer. Clean-up is also easy; simply wash with water and soap once done.
- EFFECTIVE FORMULATION: Made in the USA, our water-based silane/siloxane concrete sealer offers up to 5 years of protection. Free from strong odors and VOCs, the water repellent is safe for people, pets, and plants.
Consider traction as well as sheen. A high-gloss, film-forming sealer may make smooth, untextured concrete more slippery when wet. The guide discusses anti-skid additives and penetrating sealer as alternatives. Before application, confirm compatibility, prepare the surface as directed, and follow the specific product label. Resealing needs vary with traffic, weather, and exposure, so a general service-life estimate cannot promise a schedule for a particular patio.
