Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and it supplies magnesium—not the nitrogen in Utah State University Extension’s cilantro feeding guidance. Add it only when a soil test or reliable field history indicates a magnesium need; the reviewed guidance provides no cilantro-specific household dose.
What should you use to feed cilantro?
Utah State University Extension recommends a light nitrogen feeding for cilantro: ¼ cup of 21-0-0 fertilizer per 25 square feet, once or twice during the growing season. This is the extension’s crop-specific recommendation, published in 2018, not a universal rate for every soil or location. The guidance cautions that too much nitrogen can make cilantro less flavorful. Read the Utah State University Extension cilantro guide.
Epsom salt does not replace that nitrogen feed. It is magnesium sulfate, a source of magnesium and sulfate, so it serves a different purpose from a nitrogen fertilizer.
When is Epsom salt appropriate for cilantro?
Use magnesium sulfate only if testing or reliable field history indicates a magnesium need. Oregon State University Extension describes magnesium fertilization as rarely needed for vegetables and conditions its use on low soil-test magnesium or field history suggesting deficiency. It notes that Epsom salt can supply magnesium without affecting soil pH. See Oregon State Extension’s magnesium guidance.

A single plant symptom does not establish that cilantro needs magnesium. Clemson Extension recommends testing soil through an accredited soil or agricultural laboratory to determine magnesium status, and Oregon State likewise says soil testing is the reliable way to determine plant-available magnesium. Follow the test’s local recommendation rather than applying Epsom salt by guesswork. See Clemson Extension’s garden guidance.
How much Epsom salt should you apply?
The reviewed extension sources do not establish a cilantro-specific household Epsom salt rate. Don’t transfer rates intended for greenhouse growing media or commercial vegetable fields to a home herb bed. If a soil test recommends magnesium, use the amount and application method specified in that test’s local interpretation or by your extension service.

Avoid improvised soil-drench or foliar-spray recipes. Clemson Extension warns that excess Epsom salt can add unnecessary salts to garden soil; salt accumulation around roots can interfere with water uptake.

How the two fertilizer decisions differ
| Decision | What it supplies | When to use it | Guidance and context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Routine cilantro feeding | Nitrogen from 21-0-0 fertilizer | Light feeding during the growing season | Utah State University Extension’s 2018 recommendation: ¼ cup per 25 square feet, once or twice per season. Too much nitrogen may reduce flavor. |
| Corrective magnesium supplementation | Magnesium and sulfate from Epsom salt | Only when a soil test or reliable field history indicates a need | Oregon State and Clemson Extension guidance; neither provides a cilantro-specific home-garden dose. |
