Then set its width, choose a surface that suits the traffic and access needs, and plan for water and upkeep. A path that works well connects useful destinations, protects planting from foot traffic and stays practical in local conditions.
Plan the route around destinations
Mark the places people need to reach: the house, garden entrance, planting beds, seating, water points and storage. Consider both existing and planned structures, as well as how mature plants may narrow or shade the route. A path can organize garden spaces and keep routine trips from trampling beds.
Think about how the route will be used in each direction. A short route to a frequently used gate or hose point may need a more durable surface than a lightly used trail through a planted area. Before building, you can sketch the route on the ground and check whether it feels direct and leaves enough room around plants and structures.
Choose a width for the people and equipment using it
Path-width recommendations vary because they address different users and settings. Treat them as context-specific guidance, not one universal standard.

For a home garden, decide whether a path is for one person walking, two people passing, a wheelbarrow, or mobility-device use. A route that needs to accommodate turns or passing requires more space than a narrow secondary trail. Check the tightest points along the whole route—not just its average width—and leave clear passage around gates, furniture and planting.
Compare surfaces by access, drainage and upkeep
Surface choice is a trade-off between firmness, appearance, water movement, durability and maintenance. A material that looks right may not be suitable for a mobility device or heavy traffic; performance also depends on the base, installation and route details.

For wheelchair or scooter travel, prioritize a firm, stable, smooth and level surface with enough width and clear passage. Oregon State Extension identifies concrete and asphalt as reliable hard-paved options and says compacted gravel can also be used. That general guidance does not mean every installation of those materials will be accessible: loose or uneven finishes, abrupt edges and difficult turns can still create barriers. Keep hoses and tools out of the route.
Plan drainage and edges with the path
Where conditions allow, consider a surface that lets water pass through. UF/IFAS recommends pervious materials where possible and suggests a slight 2% cross-slope to encourage drainage. It also recommends leaving space between stepping stones for water flow and edging loose gravel or mulch so it stays within the route.

These are design recommendations, not a substitute for assessing the site. Soil, grade and rainfall affect how water moves; avoid sending runoff toward a building or creating a route that becomes difficult to use when wet. For a regulated outdoor project, check the rules that apply locally.

For a route intended for wheelchair or scooter users, assess the entire journey: width, firmness, stability, smoothness, level changes, turns and places to pass or pause. A suitable paving material cannot compensate for a path that is too narrow or blocked by equipment.

The U.S. Access Board’s Chapter 10: Outdoor Developed Areas gives technical requirements for certain outdoor developed areas, including trails and outdoor recreation access routes. For example, its trail guidance allows cross-slope up to 2% on concrete, asphalt or board surfaces, and up to 5% for other surfaces when needed for drainage; it also calls for resting intervals when running slope exceeds 5%. These provisions apply to the route types covered by the guide and are not automatically a home-garden code checklist. Check applicable local rules if the project is regulated.
Allow for maintenance from the outset
Choose a surface with an upkeep routine you can realistically sustain. NParks’ maintenance examples reflect tropical Singapore conditions, so local climate and site conditions may differ.
- Gravel: contain it with edging and expect to replace material as stones move or the surface thins.
- Stepping stones: leave access to joints for weeding and keep stones level.
- Grass: plan for ongoing care and consider whether regular foot traffic will wear it down.
- Hard paving: clean it when algae or other growth makes the surface slippery; NParks notes annual scrubbing where wet-season algae grows in its context.
UF/IFAS sums up the water-management principle this way: “Wherever possible, use pervious surfaces for walkways (this goes for driveways, too).” The best choice still depends on the route’s users, traffic and site conditions.
