How do I fill a propane tank? If you have a portable grill cylinder, take it to a propane retailer or refill location and have trained personnel inspect and fill it. Consumers should not operate the dispenser, handle the fill hose, vent propane, or use an overfill-prevention device to judge when a cylinder is full.

Use these 10 steps to prepare for a refill and handle the cylinder safely. The instructions apply to portable cylinders; other tank types may require different service.

10 steps to refill a portable propane cylinder safely

  1. Choose a propane retailer or refill location

Call ahead to confirm the location accepts your cylinder type, has trained personnel available, and is open when you plan to visit. Ask about current service terms and price; these vary by location.

  2. Check the cylinder before transporting it

Look for visible damage. Do not use a damaged cylinder or one that has been in a fire, and do not try to repair or modify it. If you suspect damage or a valve problem, tell the retailer before service. PERC’s Safety Guide for Propane Users provides consumer safety guidance.

    • EMPTY TANK: Pre-purged vacuum ready for filling with propane; built from high-grade, welded steel and powder coated for rust prevention
    • OVERFILL PREVENTION DEVICE: Comes with an OPD valve to prevent overfilling; required by law in most States, if your tank doesn't have this, most places won't fill it!
    • SAFETY: X-ray and hydrostatic tested and DOT and Transport Canada certified so you can be sure to transport safely both in the US and CA
    • SUIT YOUR NEEDS: With a standard-size connection valve, this large 30lb tank will connect as easily as smaller tanks, and work with RVs or trailers, propane tank attachable heaters, and other accessories.
  3. Transport it upright and secured

Follow the retailer’s or service provider’s transport instructions. Keep the cylinder upright and secured during transport; do not leave it loose in a vehicle.

  4. Confirm the cylinder has an OPD

An Overfill Prevention Device (OPD) is a required safety feature for the consumer cylinder guidance here, not a gauge for checking the fill level. PERC says: “Only use cylinders with an Overfill Prevention Device (OPD).” If you are unsure whether yours has one, ask the retailer and use an OPD-equipped exchange cylinder or buy a new cylinder if needed.

  6. Let trained personnel inspect and fill it

Propane dispensing should be handled by properly trained personnel using appropriate procedures and equipment. AmeriGas says dispenser operators must be properly trained, and the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC) maintains a dispensing safety training program. Stay out of the filling process; do not operate the equipment yourself.

Follow the attendant’s directions and keep clear while the cylinder is being serviced. Do not touch the fill hose, operate controls, or attempt to vent propane.

  8. Do not use the OPD as a fill gauge

The OPD is a safety feature, not permission to decide when filling is complete. AmeriGas states: “The Overfilling Prevention Device (OPD) should never be used for determining if a cylinder is full.” Filling personnel use cylinder markings and other appropriate procedures; PERC training material describes using water capacity (WC), tare weight (TW), a capacity chart, and a scale.

Can I refill a 20 lb propane tank?

A 20 lb cylinder is a common portable-cylinder type, but whether a particular refill location accepts yours depends on the cylinder and provider. Call first, and make sure it has an OPD. The “20 lb” designation is not a consumer fill instruction: PERC training material explains that filling personnel use cylinder markings such as WC and TW with a chart and scale. For example, its training material illustrates WC 47.8 pounds corresponding to 20 pounds of propane; that is staff training context, not a method for filling a cylinder yourself.

How to choose between refilling and exchanging

Refill and exchange services differ by provider. With a refill, ask whether you keep your own cylinder and whether staff will inspect and service it. With an exchange, ask what cylinder you receive and what the service terms are. Compare local availability and current prices directly with retailers; there is no universal price winner.

What to do with a damaged or unwanted cylinder

Do not put a damaged or unwanted propane cylinder in household trash. Ask a propane retailer or your municipality about local disposal options. PERC’s Safety Guide for Propane Users covers disposal guidance as well as damaged-cylinder precautions.

Why the filling steps are for trained personnel

Filling is not a consumer DIY task. PERC training material discusses checking WC (water capacity) and TW (tare weight) and using a filling chart and scale as part of the trained process. Those details explain why cylinder markings matter, but they are not a recipe for operating a dispenser. PERC offers separate dispensing training for small cylinders and other propane systems through its Dispensing Propane Safely program.
