How to Fertilize Meyer Lemon Trees: Schedule, Product, and Application

Feed outdoor potted Meyer lemons during active growth, starting in spring, and let the fertilizer label determine the dose. Indoor trees need a separate, half-strength schedule.

For an outdoor potted Meyer lemon, start feeding in spring with a citrus-labeled or slow-release fertilizer, following the product label. Extension guidance ranges from two or three applications per year to at least three seasonal feedings, so the fertilizer’s directions—not a universal spoonful—should set the dose and interval. Indoor trees need a different approach: use half-strength fertilizer every four to six weeks while they are actively growing.

Outdoor container schedule

Feed an outdoor potted Meyer lemon during active growth, beginning in spring. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources (UC ANR) recommends two to three applications per year for outdoor container Meyer lemons. Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturists recommends at least three feedings across spring, early summer, and late summer, then stopping by early fall and not fertilizing in winter. These are seasonal Extension guidelines that differ in detail; use the directions for your chosen product to determine its dose and interval.

Do not transfer an in-ground citrus rate to a pot. Container volume, fertilizer formulation, and label directions all affect how much to apply.

Choose a fertilizer and follow its label

For a potted Meyer lemon, choose a citrus-labeled fertilizer or a slow-release granular product and apply it exactly as directed. Maryland Extension describes container citrus as heavy nitrogen feeders and suggests looking for a 2-1-1 or 3-1-1 nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium ratio as a selection guide. It also allows organic granular, slow-release, citrus-labeled, or liquid options; no single format is established as best for every tree.

UC ANR favors slow-release fertilizer for outdoor container trees. Liquid fertilizer, including fish emulsion, is another option identified by Maryland Extension and can be applied when watering. Do not combine products or assume that their doses and schedules are interchangeable.

Indoor and newly repotted Meyer lemons

For a Meyer lemon grown indoors as a houseplant, UC ANR recommends half-strength fertilizer every four to six weeks. Treat this as separate guidance from the outdoor-container seasonal schedule; follow the selected product’s label and account for whether the tree is actively growing.

  • Easy Application Schedule – Apply 3–4 times a year—late winter, late spring, and early fall—by spreading around the drip line or mixing in fresh soil at planting or repotting.

If you have just potted or repotted the tree, wait until new leaves begin developing before feeding, as UC ANR advises.

In-ground trees: follow regional landscape guidance

Landscape citrus recommendations are not container instructions, and they vary by region. Do not use the following schedules or rates as a recipe for a potted Meyer lemon.

Florida

UF/IFAS recommends light, frequent feeding for young landscape citrus and four to five fertilizer applications per year after the third year. For application, spread fertilizer evenly under the canopy to its edge or slightly beyond it; do not pile fertilizer against the trunk. UF/IFAS also publishes Florida home-landscape rates by tree age and soil conditions, including a 6-6-6-2 fertilizer example for young trees. Those region- and setting-specific rates should not be repurposed for containers.

California

UC Statewide IPM Program guidance for California landscape citrus discusses nitrogen applications in January or February, with further applications in May and possibly June, and cautions against late-season fertilizing. This timing is regional in-ground advice, not a general schedule for container trees.

Overfertilizing and yellow leaves

More fertilizer is not a shortcut to more lemons. UF/IFAS associates overfertilizing with excessive vegetative growth at the expense of fruiting, while UC IPM cautions that late-season feeding can encourage excessive new growth. Stick to the label rather than increasing the dose or frequency on your own.

Yellow leaves alone do not establish that a tree needs more fertilizer. UC ANR notes yellowing as a possible cue to consider feeding, but UF/IFAS and UC IPM also identify micronutrient deficiencies and soil conditions as possible causes. UF/IFAS describes iron deficiency in Florida as chlorotic leaves with green veins and recommends checking soil pH when foliage looks unhealthy without an obvious pest cause. UC IPM notes that citrus can also develop zinc or iron deficiencies. Assess the growing conditions and seek locally appropriate advice before treating yellow leaves as a fertilizer problem.
