Repair your dryer when the written estimate is reasonable for its age, value, condition and likely remaining service; replace it when the full repair and future-risk costs outweigh a suitable replacement. There is no universal age or repair-price cutoff. Before deciding, check warranty and recall coverage, then compare the complete repair quote—including any service charge—with the cost of buying and installing a dryer that fits your home.
How to decide whether it is worth repairing a dryer
Use the specific repair estimate and the condition of your machine rather than a blanket rule such as “replace it after ten years” or “never spend more than half its price.” Consumer Reports’ decision tool weighs dryer age, type, original cost and estimated repair cost. Its examples show why the same repair may make sense for a newer, higher-priced dryer but not for an older, heavily used, lower-priced one. Those examples are context, not a prediction for your model or household.
- Repair cost: Ask for a written estimate that separates diagnosis or service-call charges, parts and labor. Include any charge that applies even if you decline the repair.
- Age, value and use: Consider how long you have owned the dryer, how heavily it has been used, its original price and its present condition. Age alone does not establish how much useful service remains.
- Warranty or recall coverage: Check the warranty and the manufacturer’s page for your exact model before authorizing paid work. A recall may cover parts, service or replacement. For a smart dryer, check whether manufacturer diagnostics or a software update applies.
- Replacement cost: Compare the repair total with the price of a suitable new dryer plus delivery, installation and any required changes to hookups or the vent. A cheaper replacement that does not fit the space or household needs is not an equivalent comparison.
- Likely future reliability and energy use: Weigh the chance of additional repairs and the energy use of the current and replacement models. Do not assume a new model’s advertised efficiency will translate directly into a particular household-bill saving.
Consumer Reports’ 2026 article says 90% of dryers purchased from 2015 to 2025 were still in use; that survey-based figure does not predict the lifespan of an individual machine. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2024 rulemaking analysis modeled average annual repair rates of 12% for electric dryers and 14% for gas dryers, using Consumer Reports data. Those are agency model inputs, not forecasts for a particular owner. How much should dryer repair cost?
Consumer Reports reported these median repair costs from its 2024 survey. Its purchase-price bands were under $700, $700–$900 and over $900. The figures are survey medians, not complete quotes for a particular repair, location or service provider.

The same 2024 Consumer Reports survey found that among people who used professionals for dryer repairs, 68% paid out of pocket, 22% had at least part of the repair covered by an original manufacturer warranty, and 10% had at least part covered by an extended warranty. These survey results do not establish what coverage applies to your appliance. Service charges vary by region and may be added to repair totals; Consumer Reports’ source notes they can be higher in large cities and on the coasts. Get a local written estimate and verify coverage for your model. Consumer Reports’ guide provides the survey figures and explains their limits.
What should you check before calling a dryer repair technician?
Start with lint and accessible airflow checks
If clothes are taking longer to dry, clean the lint screen and check accessible external ducting for airflow. Dean Landers, president of Landers Appliance, a certified service center in Baltimore, told Consumer Reports: “Anyone can clean the lint screen and check the external ducting to ensure proper airflow.” He also said vinyl or foil external ducts should be replaced with metal flex or rigid ducts. Follow the dryer manufacturer’s instructions and use a qualified professional if the vent layout or access makes inspection or cleaning uncertain. Vent maintenance can address airflow problems; it does not repair a motor, control, heating system, belt or other mechanical fault. Consumer Reports’ guidance includes Landers’ advice.

Get a diagnosis for faults beyond basic maintenance
Most problems beyond these basic checks need a technician. Consult the model’s manual and manufacturer support for troubleshooting; specialized parts or tools may require an authorized distributor. If the cause is unclear or appears complex, ask a qualified technician for a diagnosis and written estimate rather than treating vent cleaning as a cure-all.
Check safety and recall information
Dryer fires are a recognized safety concern. Check the model for recalls and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission lists UL 2158, 5th Edition, for electric clothes dryers and ANSI Z21.5.1/CSA 7.1 for gas dryers as relevant voluntary consensus standards. These standards are safety context, not a do-it-yourself repair procedure. The CPSC clothes-dryer standards page addresses dryer safety standards; use the manufacturer’s model information to check for applicable recalls.

When does replacing a dryer make more sense?
Replacement is more compelling when the written repair estimate is high relative to the dryer’s age, original value and condition, especially if another repair is likely or the machine no longer meets your needs. It may also be the practical choice when a covered repair is unavailable, the fault is uneconomic to fix, or you cannot rely on the appliance. Conversely, a repair may be sensible when the dryer is in good condition, the fault is limited, the estimate is manageable and coverage does not resolve the cost. Make the call using the total costs and circumstances—not one survey median or an age rule.
Before purchasing, check physical dimensions, delivery access, capacity, performance, fuel type, hookups and installation requirements. Compare the energy use of specific models, and consider ENERGY STAR certification. Consumer Reports’ 2026 article says certified dryers use 20% less energy than conventional dryers; this is not a guaranteed 20% reduction in an individual household’s bill. The DOE says compliance with amended dryer standards is required March 1, 2028; that future compliance date is not, by itself, a reason to replace a working dryer. Plan for disposal before ordering a replacement. Consumer Reports recommends finding a nearby recycling center; also check whether your retailer offers haul-away and what local rules require. The EPA reported that more than 2 million tons of large-appliance waste went to landfills in 2018, as cited by Consumer Reports. In Consumer Reports’ 2025 survey of 86,609 dryer owners, 12% reported that their dryer was not drying, the most common reported problem; 10% reported tangled clothes. These figures describe survey responses, not the probability that a particular symptom has a particular cause. A drying problem can warrant a basic airflow check, but the right repair depends on diagnosis. Consumer Reports’ guide reports the survey results.
