To extend speaker wire, power off the receiver or amplifier, mark the positive and negative conductors, and join each to its matching extension wire with a connector rated for the cable’s gauge and construction. Insulate and secure both joints, then reconnect positive to positive and negative to negative at the receiver and speaker.
What you need before you start
- Speaker wire suitable for the existing run and your equipment.
- A wire stripper and a cutting tool.
- Two connectors compatible with the actual wire gauge and whether its conductors are stranded or solid.
- Labels or tape to mark polarity, if the cable markings are unclear.
There is no single speaker-wire gauge that suits every cable length, amplifier, speaker impedance, and installation. Check the equipment documentation or a reliable wire-sizing reference rather than treating one gauge as universal. Measure along the intended route and leave enough slack for safe routing and future access.
Choose a splice connector for the cable and location
Check the connector’s stated wire-size range and conductor compatibility before buying or using it. Do not assume a connector works with every stranded speaker cable. The connector must also suit the installation environment, and its instructions determine the required preparation and tools.
| Connector example | What its instructions establish | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| 3M closed-end crimp connector | For solid or stranded copper AWG wire; the instructions specify stripping 1/2 inch, pre-twisting, inserting, and crimping (3M installation information). | Confirm the exact connector covers your cable’s gauge and follow its product instructions. |
| 3M Scotchlok 314 | Its instruction sheet specifies conductor ranges and says not to use it for direct underground burial or submerged applications (3M Scotchlok 314 sheet). | These limits apply to this product; check the markings and instructions for any connector you use. |
Connector types can differ in wire range, environment suitability, tools, and how the joint is protected from strain. The manufacturer information cited here does not provide comparative test results showing that one general splice method is always better or safer.

Extend the speaker wire step by step
- Plan and measure the route. Measure along the route the cable will actually follow, including slack for safe routing and service. For a route inside a wall or ceiling, confirm the cable jacket is approved for that location and follow local requirements. The cited manufacturer guidance does not provide a complete in-wall wiring code guide.
- Power off the receiver or amplifier. Turn it off before disconnecting or handling speaker wire at its terminals. Klipsch gives the same instruction in its speaker-wire installation guide.
- Identify and mark polarity. Find the conductor distinguished by a stripe, ridge, color, or printed marking. Mark the same conductor at both ends before cutting. Keep the identified positive wire connected to positive throughout the run and the other conductor connected to negative. Klipsch explains that mismatched polarity can adversely affect sound and advises matching positive to positive and negative to negative (Klipsch polarity guidance).
- Cut and prepare the wires. Cut the existing cable where the splice can remain accessible and protected from tension. Prepare the extension wire with the same polarity identification. Strip only the length specified for your connector, using a wire stripper and avoiding damage to the strands. Strip lengths are not universal: Klipsch describes about 3/8 inch for its terminal connection, Marantz specifies about 10 mm for the Model 60n speaker terminal, and 3M specifies 1/2 inch for its cited closed-end crimp connector. Follow the instructions for your exact connector and equipment (Klipsch; Marantz Model 60n manual; 3M connector instructions).
- Join positive to positive and negative to negative. Keep the two conductors separate; do not join opposite polarities together. Prepare each joint exactly as the connector manufacturer directs. For the cited 3M closed-end crimp connector, the instructions call for pre-twisting the copper conductors, inserting them, and crimping. That procedure is specific to that connector.
- Insulate and secure the joints. Make sure no bare conductor or stray strand can touch the other polarity or nearby metal. Keep the splice from carrying cable tension, and protect it as appropriate for the location and connector. Do not infer an installation’s environmental suitability from a connector’s appearance; check its stated limits.
- Reconnect and inspect. Connect the marked positive conductor to the receiver’s positive terminal and the speaker’s positive terminal; do the same for negative. Secure the terminations and check for loose joints or stray strands before restoring power. Start playback at low volume and confirm both channels work.
Keep speaker wire separate from household extension cords
A household mains extension cord is a different product from low-voltage speaker wire. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission describes extension cords as factory-assembled cords used to extend electricity from an outlet to portable devices (CPSC extension-cord guidance). Do not use household extension-cord guidance as instructions for splicing speaker wire.

If the cable markings are unclear, do not guess: trace and label each conductor before making the splice. Klipsch also describes an optional polarity check with the speaker cable disconnected from the amplifier or receiver (Klipsch polarity guidance). Follow the equipment manual when reconnecting terminals.
