To deadhead a flower, follow its fading stem down to the next healthy leaf, lateral bud, or side shoot, then pinch or cut just above that point. Remove only the spent bloom and avoid nearby buds and healthy foliage. This can keep a plant tidy, reduce unwanted seeds, and encourage another flush on some flowers—but not every plant will rebloom.
How to deadhead flowers
- Find the faded bloom. Remove it when its appearance declines, before seed pods form if you want to limit self-seeding.
- Trace the stem downward. Look for the next healthy leaves, a lateral bud, or a side shoot.
- Pinch or cut just above that point. Keep the cut close, but do not damage the bud or remove healthy leaves.
- Check the rest of the plant before trimming more. Flowers in a cluster may fade at different times, and a broad cut can remove unopened buds.
The best cut depends on the plant’s growth habit. For multi-flower stalks, remove individual faded flowers as they finish; once the whole stalk is done, cut it back to a leaf or bud. On plants with foliage at the base, such as iris or hosta, remove the finished stalk down to the base. Iowa State University Extension and Illinois Extension offer guidance on these different cuts.
When to deadhead—and what to expect
Inspect plants regularly while they are blooming and remove flowers as they fade. A quick weekly check is a practical routine, though how long an individual flower lasts varies by species and weather. Before shearing a plant, look for buds that could be cut off.
Deadheading improves appearance and reduces unwanted seed or fruit formation. It may also extend flowering or prompt a new flush in some annuals and perennials, including marigolds, zinnias, geraniums, coreopsis, garden phlox, yarrow, salvia, and delphinium. The response varies by species and cultivar, so removing old blooms does not guarantee more flowers. Many petunias and impatiens are self-cleaning and generally do not need deadheading. You can also leave attractive seed heads when you prefer them to a tidier look. Penn State Extension discusses the range of responses among herbaceous plants.

Annuals
For annuals that benefit from deadheading, pinch faded flowers regularly to reduce seed formation and encourage continued bloom. Check the cultivar first: self-cleaning types generally shed spent flowers without help. Iowa State University Extension provides guidance for annuals and other ornamentals.
Perennials
Remove a spent flower head back to a healthy leaf or bud. Some perennials, such as delphinium, salvia, and catmint, may produce another flush after their flower stalks are cut back. Other plants may mainly look neater or produce fewer unwanted seedlings.

Roses
For established hybrid tea, grandiflora, and floribunda roses, Iowa State University Extension recommends cutting about a quarter-inch above a five-leaflet leaf, keeping at least two five-leaflet leaves on each shoot, and making the cut parallel to the leaf angle. In a rose’s first growing season, remove the faded bloom above the uppermost three-leaflet leaf to preserve foliage. Shrub and old-fashioned roses often need little or no deadheading.
Iowa State advises stopping this deadheading in late summer—late August or September in its Iowa context—so rose hips can form. That calendar guidance is regional; use local advice for your climate rather than applying those dates everywhere. See Iowa State’s full rose and ornamental guidance.

Flowers on a stalk or in a cluster
Remove individual flowers in a cluster as they fade, leaving the rest to finish blooming. When every flower on the stalk has finished, cut the stalk back to a leaf or bud—or to the base on iris and hosta, where foliage grows from the base.

Fingers are enough for many soft, delicate stems. Use small snips for finer control or bypass hand pruners and sharp hand shears for larger, tougher stems. Tools are optional when a stem pinches cleanly. If a removed flower shows signs of disease, put it in the trash rather than the compost to reduce the risk of spreading disease. Illinois Extension also recommends tracing the stem to a healthy leaf, bud, or side shoot before cutting.
