For a steady tomato harvest, choose a variety suited to your climate and space, give it sun and well-drained soil, install support at planting, and keep moisture as even as you can. Indeterminate tomatoes can keep flowering and fruiting through the season when conditions allow; determinate plants tend to produce a more concentrated crop. No planting date or watering schedule works everywhere, so use local frost dates and growing advice.

Choose a tomato variety for your space and harvest

Start with the plant label and recommendations from your local Cooperative Extension service. Varieties differ in maturity time, plant size, fruit type, disease resistance, and tolerance for heat. A locally tested, disease-resistant choice is often a better bet than picking by fruit description alone.

Type Harvest pattern Space and support
Determinate Produces most of its crop over a relatively short period. Often more compact and manageable in small spaces; support is still useful.
Indeterminate Keeps growing and setting fruit over a longer period when weather and plant health permit. Usually needs more substantial support and room to grow.

For a patio or container, look for patio, dwarf, or determinate varieties. In hot climates, high nighttime temperatures can interrupt fruit set in some large-fruited tomatoes; local Extension recommendations can help identify heat-tolerant options.

“All summer long” is an aim, not a guarantee. The length and rhythm of the harvest depend on variety, planting date, local frost window, heat, disease pressure, and care. Staggering plantings may spread harvest timing where the local season allows, but it cannot overcome unsuitable temperatures or a short growing season.

Give tomatoes sun, drainage, and room

Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. In a garden bed, consider a soil test before adding fertilizer or other amendments. The University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension gives a target soil pH of 6.2 to 6.8; follow your own soil-test results and local recommendations rather than applying a fixed treatment everywhere.

Leave enough room for the mature plant and its support, with spacing guided by the variety label. Good airflow and keeping leaves from remaining wet can reduce some disease risks, though neither practice guarantees a disease-free crop.

Can I grow tomatoes in a pot?

Yes. Choose a large container with drainage holes and use soilless potting mix rather than garden topsoil, which can compact and drain poorly in a pot. UNH Extension recommends one plant per four- or five-gallon container. Compact varieties are easier to manage, but larger-growing plants can also be grown if the container and support suit their eventual size.

Container plants have less water and nutrient reserve than plants in a garden bed. Check the mix frequently, especially during hot or windy weather, and follow the potting mix and fertilizer labels for feeding guidance.

Do tomatoes need a cage or other support?

Support keeps vines upright and fruit off the soil. Install a cage, stake, or trellis when planting, before roots spread and make installation more difficult. Choose a support sized for the mature variety: indeterminate plants generally need a sturdier, taller structure than compact types.

  • Cage: A practical choice when you want to contain a plant without tying it to a single stake; check that it is sturdy enough for the variety.
  • Stake: Takes less space, but usually requires tying the plant as it grows.
  • Trellis: Can guide growth upward and suit rows or planned pruning, but needs secure installation.

Pruning depends on the variety and support system. There is no single routine that is necessary for every tomato plant; follow local guidance for the type you are growing.

How often should I water tomato plants?

Water deeply at the base of the plant and adjust the frequency to the weather, soil, and container size. Aim for reasonably consistent moisture while fruit develops rather than letting plants dry out and then giving them a large amount of water. Pots dry faster than garden beds and may need daily attention, particularly in hot or windy conditions; check the soil instead of relying on a fixed calendar.

Make sure excess water can drain, and avoid routinely wetting foliage. As UNH Extension puts it, “An even moisture supply throughout the time the fruit is developing helps prevent a condition called blossom end rot, as well as for supplying the water needed to develop the fruit – too much water at any one time may cause ripening fruit to split.” UNH Extension’s tomato growing guidance also recommends steady moisture.

Why are my tomatoes splitting?

Splitting is associated with inconsistent water supply: fruit may crack when a dry spell is followed by abundant water. It is not proof of one specific cause, but keeping moisture steadier can help. Mulch around garden plants to conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and keep fruit from touching soil. UNH Extension suggests organic options such as straw, pine needles, or leaves; in cooler growing conditions, wait until the soil has warmed before applying mulch.

Why is the bottom of my tomato turning black?

A dark, sunken patch at the blossom end can be blossom-end rot. Inconsistent moisture is associated with the condition, but the symptom alone does not establish its cause. Keep watering even as fruit develops, check that containers drain properly, and avoid applying fertilizer by guesswork. Use a soil test and local Extension guidance to decide whether any soil or nutrient adjustment is appropriate.

How should I feed and protect tomato plants?

Use soil-test results where available and follow fertilizer directions. Too much nitrogen can encourage lush leaves at the expense of fruit. Container plants may need more frequent feeding because they have less soil to draw nutrients from; use directions for the potting mix and fertilizer, along with local Extension advice.

  • Choose disease-resistant varieties recommended for your area.
  • Rotate planting locations when possible.
  • Check plants regularly for signs of pests or disease so you can respond early.
  • Keep foliage dry where practical and remove plant debris that may harbor problems.

These steps help manage risk, but they cannot guarantee a pest- or disease-free harvest.

When are tomatoes ready to pick?

Harvest when the fruit has reached its variety’s mature color and feels slightly soft. Timing varies by cultivar and growing conditions, so color and feel are more useful than a universal calendar date. A 2025 fact sheet from University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources notes that tomato fruit is 95% water and advises picking when fruit is fully colored and slightly soft to the touch.
