To hire a sawyer, find local custom or portable-sawmill operators, then ask each whether they serve your property, can handle your logs, and will mill them on-site. Give candidates the same details about the trees, access, and lumber you want so you can compare complete quotes—not just a headline rate. Local availability, charges, and permissions depend on where you live.
Where to find a sawyer near you
Search local business listings for “sawyers,” “lumber,” and “logging.” You can also check portable-sawmill manufacturers’ owner directories and lumber-milling directories. University or state forestry directories may list providers who take smaller custom jobs, including backyard trees. These are starting points, not guarantees: contact each operator to confirm they are active, serve your area, and accept custom work.
Ask specifically whether the provider brings a portable mill to the property or requires you to deliver logs. Some operators offer on-site service; others do not. What information to send when requesting a quote
Give each sawyer a consistent description so their estimates address the same job. Include:

- Tree species, if known, and how long the trees have been down.
- Number of logs, approximate diameter and length, and whether they are already cut to manageable lengths.
- Where the logs are located, how the operator can reach them, and the available space to set up and work.
- Whether you can transport logs to the mill or need the operator to move them on-site.
- The lumber, beams, slabs, or other products you want, with target dimensions or a cut list if you have one.
Photos and measurements can help a provider assess the job, but they do not replace a site visit when access or log handling is uncertain. Ask whether the sawyer needs to inspect the property before confirming the quote.
Confirm the mill can produce what you need
Ask whether the operator’s mill can handle your logs’ species and dimensions, and whether the requested products are practical from those logs. If you want furniture stock, discuss the sawing pattern before work starts: quarter sawing can suit some projects, but it takes more effort and costs more. If you need dried or surfaced lumber, ask whether the sawyer can arrange drying or whether you will need separate services such as a planer or jointer.

Compare the full cost, not just the rate
Sawyers may charge by time, board foot, a percentage of the finished lumber’s value, or another arrangement. Oregon State University Extension describes these as possible pricing approaches, not a current rate schedule for every region: OSU Extension’s custom portable sawmill guidance. There is no single rate to rely on without knowing the location, logs, access, and scope of work.
Ask each candidate what the quoted price includes and what could cost extra. In particular, clarify setup, travel, relocation, minimum charges, log preparation or cleaning, bucking, loading, moving logs or finished lumber, extra labor, and who pays for blade damage. Also establish who will stack the lumber and whether you must provide helpers.

Check responsibilities, insurance, and site safety
Ask whether the operator is bonded and insured, and request references if you need reassurance about similar jobs. Confirm who is responsible for handling logs and lumber, what equipment the sawyer brings, and how the work area will be kept clear. If a customer or helper will be near the mill, follow the operator’s directions and use the required protective equipment; keep children, pets, and other unauthorized people out of the work area.
Agree on who will buck, skid, load, and stack the material before the mill arrives. If the logs need to be moved and the sawyer cannot do it, you may need to arrange suitable equipment or delivery yourself.

Put the scope and terms in writing
Before work begins, write down the property and logs covered, the products and sawing pattern requested, the rate basis, setup and travel assumptions, any extra charges, payment timing, and each person’s responsibilities for moving and handling the material. Confirm that you own the logs or have authority to arrange the work. Check local permissions when relevant
Ownership, zoning, protected-tree rules, and other restrictions can vary by jurisdiction. If any may apply to your trees or the milling activity, check with the relevant local authority before scheduling the work.
