Build an outdoor TV cabinet around the exact television, mount and site—not the screen’s diagonal size. Measure the equipment, design the enclosure to shed water, seal the access door, provide protected airflow and securely support both the TV and cabinet. Treat the dimensions and details below as planning guidance: a home-built enclosure is not automatically weatherproof or certified to an IP rating.
1. Measure the TV, mount and installation site
Before choosing materials or cutting panels, record the television’s actual width, height, depth and weight. Also note its VESA mounting pattern, where its connectors sit, how far cables need to bend, and where the mount will sit inside the cabinet. A screen’s diagonal measurement does not tell you whether the TV and its connections will fit.
The construction guidance in the cabinet-building source suggests allowing at least two to three inches of clearance on all sides as a general starting point. Do not treat that as a universal requirement: check the TV and mount manuals, cable space, and the airflow needs of the specific installation before settling on interior dimensions.
Measure the mounting location, too. Consider whether the cabinet will be under a roof or exposed to direct rain and irrigation, what supports it, and how the door can open without obstruction. The site and local climate affect material, drainage, sealing and ventilation choices.

2. Choose materials for the enclosure and viewing panel
Cabinet structure
Material choice affects how you fasten the enclosure, finish exposed edges, maintain it and design its panels. The building guidance discusses powder-coated aluminum, stainless steel and HDPE as weather-resistant options. For a wood build, it discusses sealed marine-grade plywood and decay-resistant species. Follow the selected material’s instructions and use compatible finishes and sealants; no single construction or sealing system suits every substrate.
Transparent viewing panel
A transparent door panel can be acrylic, polycarbonate or tempered glass. These materials involve trade-offs in weight, clarity, scratch and impact behavior, and cost. The construction guidance describes acrylic as lighter and easier to work but more prone to scratching; tempered glass as clearer and more scratch resistant but heavier and more expensive. Polycarbonate is another option discussed by the source, but it does not establish a universal comparison or specification for it.
Choose panel thickness and framing for the size of the opening and how the panel will be supported. The source does not establish a verified thickness that is suitable for every cabinet. Check the panel supplier’s requirements rather than guessing.

3. Design the enclosure to shed water
Arrange the cabinet’s top, door and joints so rain and irrigation drain away rather than collect at seams. An overhanging or lipped door detail can help direct water away from the opening. Seal cut edges and joints with products compatible with the enclosure material, and choose exterior-rated finishes for exposed surfaces.
Plan cable entries and ventilation openings as part of the water-management design, not as afterthoughts. Any opening can create a route for water. Use protected or baffled paths where appropriate, while preserving the airflow the TV needs. The construction source recommends exterior-grade sealant and foam or rubber gaskets, but does not identify one sealant that works for every material combination.
4. Build and seal the access door
Frame the transparent panel so it is supported appropriately, then fit a continuous compressible gasket around the access-door opening. Closed-cell foam or EPDM-style weather stripping are possible gasket materials. Use latches positioned to compress the seal evenly; the seal only works as intended when the frame is flat and supported and the gasket receives suitable compression.

If you encounter any quality or installation issues, our customer service team is ready to assist.
Check that the door closes consistently around its full perimeter and that the viewing panel, hinges and latch arrangement suit the door’s weight. Use corrosion-resistant, exterior-appropriate hardware for the site exposure. A gasket and careful fit help manage water entry, but they do not by themselves establish that the completed cabinet is weatherproof.

Attach the TV mount to a properly reinforced back panel or structural frame, not merely to an unsupported facing panel. The cabinet itself also needs secure attachment to a suitable wall or support. The construction guidance recommends distributing mounting loads with through-bolts and backing support. Confirm the television and mount instructions and verify the wall or support structure before drilling.

6. Plan ventilation as well as weather protection
A closed cabinet can trap heat from the television, while sunlight can add solar heat even when the TV is off. The building guidance describes passive ventilation with low intake and high exhaust openings to encourage natural convection. Screens can help limit pest entry. In warmer conditions, active fans are an option, but the source does not establish a fan size or airflow rate for an unspecified TV and enclosure.
Vent openings complicate rain protection. Design them as sheltered or baffled paths that limit direct water entry without blocking airflow. After installation, assess temperatures in the finished setup under its actual operating and sun exposure; a design that appears sealed is not useful if it allows excessive heat to build up.
7. Treat IP ratings as test-backed claims
IEC 60529 is titled Degrees of protection provided by enclosures (IP Code) and classifies enclosure protection for electrical equipment; see the IEC catalogue entry. A commercial listing in the reviewed material advertises an IP65 outdoor TV enclosure with an acrylic panel and thermostatic fan (manufacturer listing). That is a claim about that product, not evidence that a home-built cabinet—or a DIY copy of its features—meets IP65.
Do not label a DIY cabinet IP65 or assign it another IP rating unless it has been assessed and tested under the applicable standard. UL’s cited 2015–16 White Book says outdoor equipment is marked with an enclosure Type rating or as “Raintight” or “Rainproof,” and describes IP marking as an optional investigation and marking under IEC 60529 (UL White Book). Because that guide is an older edition, it should not be treated as current compliance advice.
Quick Recap
Build-planning checklist
- Measure the specific TV, VESA pattern, mount, connectors and cable bend space.
- Check the TV, mount, viewing-panel and material instructions before finalizing dimensions or construction details.
- Choose structural and panel materials for the site exposure, maintenance needs, weight and support method.
- Arrange the roof, door, joints and cable routes to shed water away from openings.
- Fit a continuous gasket and latches that compress it evenly.
- Reinforce the TV mounting area and securely attach the cabinet to a suitable support.
- Provide protected airflow and assess heat in the completed installation.
- Use exterior-suitable finishes and corrosion-resistant hardware, and do not claim an IP rating without appropriate testing.
