To compost fall leaves, mix them with nitrogen-rich “greens,” keep the pile as damp as a wrung-out sponge, and maintain airflow by mixing or turning it. A practical starting point is two to three parts leaves and other browns to one part greens by volume. The ratio is flexible: dry leaves, pile size, and the greens available all affect how quickly the pile breaks down.

Choose a spot and prepare the leaves

Set up the pile outdoors where it can receive water and where you can reach it to add materials or turn it. Dry leaves are carbon-rich “browns.” They provide useful bulk, but a pile made mostly of leaves can decompose slowly unless it also has nitrogen-rich greens, adequate moisture, and air.

Whole leaves can go into the pile. Shredding or chopping them is optional, but smaller pieces generally break down faster. A leaf shredder can make that preparation easier; it is not essential.

Balance leaves with greens

Use two to three parts browns to one part greens by volume as a starting recipe. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends at least two to three times the volume of browns as greens, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture gives a similar two-to-three-to-one recipe. These are practical guides, not a precise formula for every pile.

#1 Best Overall
Geobin Compost Bin - 246 Gallon, Expandable, Easy Assembly, Made in the USA, Outdoor & Backyard Composter
  • Large capacity—expandable to 3.75 feet (237 gallon)
  • Easy to assemble with closure keys. Easy to move. Easy to reassemble.
  • The best value composting bin on the market.
  • Excellent ventilation.
Material type Examples
Browns Dry leaves, twigs, untreated wood chips, shredded cardboard, and non-glossy paper
Greens Fruit and vegetable scraps, grass clippings, coffee grounds and filters, paper tea bags without staples, and crushed eggshells

For example, combine a bucket of greens with two or three buckets of leaves and other browns. Adjust the mix based on how the pile behaves: add greens if it is leaf-heavy and barely breaking down, or add dry browns if it is wet or smells unpleasant.

Build the pile in layers or mix as you go

  1. Start with coarse browns. Add a four-to-six-inch base of bulky material such as twigs or wood chips to help air circulate and absorb excess liquid.
  2. Add leaves and greens. Layer them in the approximate ratio above, or mix them together as you add each batch.
  3. Cover food scraps. Bury scraps beneath four to eight inches of dry leaves or other browns. This helps keep scraps covered and can reduce odors and pests.
  4. Water as needed. Wet the mix as you build if it is dry. It should feel like a wrung-out sponge: damp, not dripping or saturated.

Keep the pile moist and aerated

Check moisture when you add material or turn the pile. Dry leaves may need watering, while rain may supply enough water in a wet period. If the pile is dry, moisten it and turn or mix it so water reaches more than the surface. If it is soggy, add dry leaves or other browns and loosen the material to restore air spaces.

Turning introduces oxygen and can speed decomposition. The USDA describes monthly turning as a rule of thumb. If you prefer a low-maintenance pile, you can turn it less often or leave it undisturbed; expect slower breakdown. A compost or garden fork is useful for turning but not required.

Know what to leave out

For a home pile, the EPA advises avoiding materials that can attract pests, create problems, or fail to break down safely in a backyard system. Keep out meat, fish, bones, dairy, fats and oils; herbicide-treated plants or grass; aggressive weeds with seeds; diseased or pest-infested plants; treated or painted wood; pet waste and cat litter; and glossy paper. Follow local composting rules if they differ.

Troubleshoot slow or smelly compost

  • The pile is dry or inactive: Dry material can slow or stop decomposition. Add water, mix it through, and consider adding greens if the pile consists mostly of leaves.
  • The pile is wet or smells unpleasant: Excess moisture or poor aeration may be responsible. Mix in dry browns and turn the pile to restore air space. Odors can also point to an imbalance in the materials.
  • The pile is breaking down slowly: A leaf-heavy pile may need more greens, moisture, smaller pieces, or turning. Change one or more of those conditions and allow time for the material to decompose.

How long does leaf compost take?

The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service says a cold pile of dry leaves and grass clippings may take several months to a year. That is an approximate range, not a guaranteed finish date. Smaller pieces, suitable moisture, added greens, and more frequent turning can speed decomposition; a passive pile may take longer.

Hot composting is not automatic. The EPA says a well-maintained backyard pile can reach 130–160°F, but not every pile will reach that range. The EPA’s broader composting guidance identifies 131–160°F as a range for optimal microbial activity and rapid decomposition. Meeting pathogen-reduction standards requires maintaining at least 131°F for several days, with the required duration depending on the method; do not assume a passive backyard pile has sanitized all of its contents.

Tell when the compost is ready

Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and has an earthy smell. If larger leaf pieces remain, sift or screen them out if you want a finer product and return those pieces to the active pile.
