The right amount depends on what you are sizing or measuring, the space or equipment involved, and the applicable design guidance. For a room, you can calculate the airflow associated with a chosen air-change rate—but that calculation does not tell you which rate to choose.
What CFM measures
CFM is a volumetric airflow rate: the volume of air moving each minute. It describes airflow, not room size or fan power. ASHRAE says HVAC volumetric airflow rates are normally reported in CFM in U.S. customary units; the corresponding SI unit is liters per second. ASHRAE Handbook
Ventilation rates vary with the space, occupancy, floor area, pollutant or moisture-control needs, and applicable standard. A bathroom exhaust fan, a home ventilation system, an air cleaner, and compressed-air equipment do not share one universal CFM target.
Calculate CFM from room volume and a chosen ACH
Air changes per hour (ACH) relates airflow to room volume. If you already have an appropriate ACH target, calculate the associated airflow this way:

CFM = ACH × room volume (ft³) ÷ 60
For a rectangular room, room volume in cubic feet is length × width × height, with all dimensions in feet. For example, a 12-by-15-foot room with an 8-foot ceiling has a volume of 1,440 ft³. At a selected rate of 5 ACH, the calculation is 5 × 1,440 ÷ 60 = 120 CFM.
The example shows the arithmetic only; it does not establish that 5 ACH is the right target for that room. CDC/NIOSH guidance describes calculating ACH from airflow and room volume, and says to calculate the contribution from each system and add them when several systems provide airflow. How to interpret published ACH figures
CDC/NIOSH’s discussion of 5 ACH
CDC/NIOSH discusses 5 ACH as a ventilation goal, while noting that science has not identified one optimum ventilation strategy for all spaces. The page says properly sized portable air cleaners can provide equivalent ACH (eACH) under EPA guidance. This is not a blanket building-code requirement or a universal design target. EPA’s residential figures tied to ASHRAE 62.2-2016
EPA cites ASHRAE Standard 62.2-2016 for residential minimum ventilation figures of 0.35 ACH, but not less than 15 CFM per person. Why a fan’s labeled CFM may not be the delivered airflow
A fan’s nominal airflow should not be treated as independent of its operating conditions. Duct layout, restrictions, and static pressure affect the airflow a system delivers. ENERGY STAR, for example, evaluates qualifying fan airflow at specified static pressures. When comparing equipment, look for airflow performance under conditions relevant to the installation rather than relying on a single headline rating. ENERGY STAR ventilating fan criteria
For an existing system, an airflow meter or anemometer may help determine delivered airflow. CDC/NIOSH recommends determining or measuring system CFM for an ACH calculation. A measurement can help establish what the system is delivering; it does not determine what airflow the application requires.

What information is needed for a specific CFM answer?
First identify what you are sizing: for example, a room ventilation system, an exhaust fan, HVAC supply airflow, or air cleaning. Then establish the relevant space or equipment, operating conditions, and applicable design requirements. Ventilation standards may use floor area or occupancy criteria rather than a single ACH rule, so room volume alone is not always enough. ASHRAE standards and guidelines
Without that application context, a generic “CFM per square foot” rule or one-number recommendation can be misleading. For a specific sizing target, start with the equipment’s purpose and the requirements that apply to that installation.
