A closed room usually does not run out of oxygen just because its windows are shut. Air conditioning cools and often recirculates room air; it does not make oxygen. Replacement outdoor air, when supplied, comes through the building’s ventilation system or through natural air exchange and small leaks. Whether a particular room gets enough outdoor air depends on its building and HVAC design.
Cooling is not the same as ventilation
An air conditioner can make a room feel cooler without bringing in outdoor air. Many room air conditioners mainly cool and recirculate the air already inside. A fan or “recirculate” setting moves that air around; it does not, by itself, replace it with fresh air.
Ventilation supplies outdoor air to dilute indoor contaminants. Filtration is a separate process that removes some particles from air passing through a filter. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency describes HVAC as supporting indoor air quality through ventilation with filtration, as well as providing thermal comfort (EPA guidance on HVAC systems). A filter does not create oxygen or prove that outdoor air is entering the room.
Where outdoor air can come from
In a mechanically ventilated building, outdoor air may enter through a dedicated intake and be distributed through ducts. Other buildings rely partly or fully on operable windows or other openings, or combine natural air exchange with mechanical ventilation. Some air can also pass through small gaps in a building’s envelope, but incidental leakage is not a dependable substitute for ventilation designed for the space.

So a room may receive outdoor air even while its windows and doors are shut, but not necessarily through the air conditioner itself. A well-sealed building can still have good indoor air quality when its HVAC system is appropriately designed and operated; a recirculating AC unit alone does not establish that the room is ventilated.
What standards do—and do not—tell you
ASHRAE lists ANSI/ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2025 for ventilation and acceptable indoor air quality in applicable nonresidential spaces, and Standard 62.2-2025 for residential dwelling units (ASHRAE titles, purposes, and scopes). Which requirements apply depends on the building type, occupancy, jurisdiction, and local adoption. Those standards do not tell you how a particular room is ventilated without details about its design and operation.

There is no reliable universal countdown for how long a closed room takes to “run out of oxygen.” The answer depends on room size, occupancy, air exchange, and other conditions. An ordinary closed room is not automatically the same as a hazardous confined space.
What to check if the room feels stuffy
- Make sure supply and return grilles are not blocked by furniture, curtains, or stored items.
- Ask the landlord, building manager, or facilities team whether the system supplies outdoor air, is operating correctly, and is maintained. The EPA recommends addressing indoor-air concerns with the responsible facility or building team (EPA indoor air quality guidance).
- Clean or replace filters as directed for the equipment. Filters can help remove particles, but they do not supply outdoor air.
- Opening a window may increase natural ventilation when weather and outdoor air quality allow. It is not always the best option: uncontrolled outdoor air can bring contaminants inside and affect system balance (EPA HVAC guidance).
What a CO₂ monitor can tell you
An indoor carbon dioxide (CO₂) reading can offer one clue about ventilation, but it is not an oxygen measurement or a safety guarantee. EPA says indoor CO₂ concentrations can provide information about ventilation but need careful interpretation (EPA on measuring indoor CO₂). A reading does not by itself prove that oxygen is safe or that a room meets applicable ventilation requirements.

Do not confuse air conditioning with carbon monoxide
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a separate hazard, not a by-product of ordinary air conditioning. It can come from fuel-burning appliances or leaking chimneys, is odorless, and can interfere with the body’s ability to deliver oxygen. If anyone has acute breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, or suspected CO exposure, leave the space and seek emergency help; a general HVAC explanation cannot diagnose symptoms.
