If the manufacturer documents a swivel lock, use it as directed. If not, don’t drill, pin, glue, wedge, clamp, or otherwise restrain the gas lift or under-seat mechanism: an improvised stop can interfere with height adjustment, load an unsupported part, or release unexpectedly. For a fixed-facing task, ask the chair maker whether it supports a compatible swivel-lock component.
First, identify which movement you need to stop
“The chair moves” can describe three different things. Check which part is moving before choosing a remedy:
- Swivel: the seat and back turn around the center column while the base stays put.
- Rolling: the whole chair travels across the floor on its casters. Caster brakes or cups address rolling, not seat rotation.
- Tilt or recline: the seat and back rock backward without rotating around the column. A tilt lock addresses this movement, not swivel.
Check for a manufacturer-approved swivel lock
- Find the chair’s model label and the manual for that exact model.
- Look for a control explicitly described as a swivel lock. Do not assume a seat-height lever or tilt/recline control locks rotation.
- If the manual gives swivel-lock instructions, follow them for operating and releasing the control. Chair mechanisms and controls are model-specific.
- If no swivel lock is documented, contact the manufacturer or supplier and ask whether a supported, compatible lockable mechanism is available for your model.
Lockable swivel mechanisms do exist as components for chair designs. Mekrapid Products Ltd describes one that allows full rotation when released and re-engages to hold the chair in a fixed direction. Its product page describes a component for integration into chair designs; it does not establish that the part fits a particular office chair or is a universal retrofit. Confirm compatibility and installation support with the chair maker before buying or fitting a component.
Why an improvised restraint is risky
The gas lift and under-seat mechanism are not generic mounting points for a stop. Drilling, inserting a pin, gluing, wedging, or clamping parts can interfere with height adjustment, put force on a part not designed to bear it, conceal damage, or let a restraint release unexpectedly. OdinLake’s guidance warns against improvised restraints; it is manufacturer guidance, not a hands-on test of a chair or aftermarket device.

Do not treat a chair’s other controls as substitutes. A tilt lock is for reclining, and caster locks or cups are for rolling. Neither normally prevents the seat from swiveling.
When a chair turns unexpectedly
If the chair unexpectedly rotates, wobbles, leans, drops, scrapes, binds, or moves unevenly, treat the behavior as a possible fault rather than trying to add friction. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection or service guidance, and stop using the chair if it appears unstable.

For a simulator or pedal setup
Pedal force can make a chair’s movement noticeable. Assess the whole setup—not just the casters—including whether the chair rotates, how you get in and out, reach to controls, and stability under ordinary task forces. Preventing the base from rolling does not lock the seat’s swivel.
For a fixed-facing task, use a manufacturer-approved compatible lock if one exists, or consider a chair and workstation intended for that task. A fixed-facing replacement chair is a more direct alternative than trying to restrain an unsupported mechanism.

Why another chair’s lock instructions may not apply
Lock designs vary. For example, the Rifton Activity Chair manual describes a lock post engaging a caster groove on model R830. That is a product-specific procedure, not an instruction for a generic office chair. Use only the manual for your own chair.
