To make a round dowel from square stock, use four roundover cuts on a router table or drive prepared stock through a dowel plate. The right method depends on whether you need a rounded end or a round dowel body.
Choose the method for the job
| Method | Useful when | Main setup | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bearing-guided roundover bit on an existing dowel | You need a rounded nose, such as an axle end | Choose a bit radius suited to the dowel and center the bearing on the workpiece | Requires careful alignment and hand rotation; backing away briefly while repositioning can help prevent burning. |
| Four roundover cuts on a router table | You need custom dowel stock, including longer pieces or a particular wood species | Start with a square blank whose sides equal the target diameter; use a bit radius half that diameter | Woodcraft says the method works best for dowels 3/8 inch in diameter and larger; smaller stock can vibrate. |
| Dowel plate | You need short custom dowels from shop stock | Prepare stock close to the target diameter, chamfer its leading tip, and match it to a plate hole | Longer pieces can flex or clog the hole in the described setup. |
These are distinct operations: the bit-size examples for rounding the end of an existing dowel are not a substitute for the sizing rule for making a full dowel body.
Round the end of an existing dowel
For small dowels such as toy-car axles, WOOD Magazine specifies a bearing-guided 1/8-inch-radius roundover bit for a 1/4-inch dowel. For a 3/8-inch dowel, it gives either a 1/8-inch- or 3/16-inch-radius bit. These recommendations come from its January 18, 2021 instructions; test the setup on the actual workpiece before cutting. WOOD Magazine’s rounded-dowel-end instructions.
- Set the router-table bit height so the bottom edge of the bearing meets the dowel’s center when viewed from the side.
- Adjust the fence so the dowel’s center meets the bearing’s center when viewed from above.
- Hold the dowel against the fence, rotate it with your other hand, and feed it into the spinning bit.
- Back the dowel away slightly while repositioning your turning hand. This pause helps avoid burning the end.
- Lightly sand the rounded end by hand, up to 180 grit.
These settings are for the cited small sizes. A bearing-guided bit and accurate alignment matter because the dowel must stay centered as you rotate it.

Make a dowel body from square stock on a router table
This method forms the dowel by rounding all four corners of a square blank. The basic sizing rule is to make each side of the square equal to the intended dowel diameter, then use a roundover bit with a radius half that diameter. WOOD Magazine describes the four-cut procedure; Woodsmith also recommends leaving square sections at the ends as reference surfaces until the cuts are complete. WOOD Magazine’s router-table procedure and Woodsmith’s four-cut method.
- Prepare the blank. Joint and plane straight-grained stock square, with each side equal to the target dowel diameter. WOOD Magazine advises making the blank 3 inches longer than the finished dowel and preparing a separate 6-inch test piece.
- Set up and test the bit. Set the pilot bearing flush with the fence and the bottom of the roundover radius flush with the table. Use the test piece, then check its fit in a hole drilled to the target diameter in scrap. Adjust the setup as needed.
- Mark the cut limits. Mark start and stop positions around the bit. Keep short square sections at the ends as references so the stock does not roll during successive cuts.
- Round the first edge. Use a pushstick to feed the stock through the cut, keeping it supported against the fence and table.
- Cut the remaining edges. Repeat the roundover on each of the other three edges, keeping the reference ends square until the cuts are done. For larger dowels, work toward the final profile in incremental passes.
- Finish and size. Trim away the square reference sections, cut the dowel to final length, and lightly sand the surface.
Woodcraft says this router-table approach works best for dowels 3/8 inch in diameter and up because smaller stock tends to vibrate and produce an uneven cut. That is Woodcraft’s stated practical limit, not a universal standard. Its setup checks are useful when a test cut is imperfect: flat spots suggest checking the fence and bit, while a ridge suggests checking bit height. Woodcraft’s router-table setup guidance.

Make short dowels with a dowel plate
A dowel plate is an alternative when you need short dowels from shop stock and have a hole in the required size. Tom McKenna’s Fine Woodworking procedure uses 1/4-inch stock as its example. He recommends sections about 6 inches long or shorter in the described setup; longer pieces can flex or clog the hole. Fine Woodworking’s dowel-plate instructions.
- Rip stock close to the desired dowel diameter.
- Plane off enough of the corners for the blank to enter the selected hole.
- Sand a chamfer on the leading tip so it starts more easily.
- Drive the stock through the plate.
- While the stock is still wedged in the plate, cut off the material near the end; then remove and trim the finished dowel.
- Lightly chamfer the finished dowel’s tips.
Check the fit and choose by diameter, length, and equipment
For a router-table dowel, the target hole in scrap is a practical fit check before you commit to the full blank. If the test piece has flat spots or a ridge, correct the setup rather than assuming sanding will fix the profile. Select straight-grained stock: Woodcraft notes that grain runout can make a spindle more likely to snap.
