To use a portable air conditioner, connect its exhaust hose to the supplied window kit, vent the hot air outdoors, and seal gaps around the window opening. Set the unit on a stable floor near the window, keep its air intakes and outlet clear, and follow the model’s manual for clearances, controls, drainage, and filter care.
Before setting up the portable AC
Check that the room has an opening where the unit’s window kit can be installed. Confirm that the kit fits the opening and that the exhaust hose reaches without being stretched, kinked, or routed contrary to the manufacturer’s instructions. If the window type or building rules affect installation, check those constraints before proceeding.
Place the appliance on a stable, level floor close enough to the window for the supplied hose to reach. Consumer Reports says portable AC hoses commonly measure 5 to 7 feet and advises leaving at least 2 feet between the unit and walls or furniture that could block airflow; use your model’s manual for its exact hose limits and clearances. (Consumer Reports, updated May 29, 2024.)
How to install and run it
- Fit the window kit. Install the supplied kit in the opening as directed in the manual, checking that its parts fit both the unit and the window.
- Connect the exhaust hose. Attach it to the appliance and window adapter using the model’s instructions. Route the hot exhaust outdoors through the installed kit.
- Seal gaps. Close gaps around the window-kit edges with compatible sealing materials so outside air does not freely enter around the installation.
- Keep airflow clear. Do not block the unit’s intake or discharge grille. Avoid bending or extending the hose beyond the manual’s limits.
- Choose cooling mode and a target temperature. Use the appliance’s own controls and instructions; there is no universal setting that suits every unit and room.
- Check for a water-full warning. If the indicator calls for draining, stop and handle condensate as directed in the manual.
Why the exhaust hose must go outdoors
The hose carries hot air out of the cooled space. A window kit helps route that exhaust outside, while sealing the opening limits air entering around the kit. Do not operate the unit with the exhaust simply discharging into the room.

Single-hose models exhaust indoor air, which can create negative pressure and draw replacement air into the cooled space from outdoors or adjoining rooms. Dual-hose models use separate intake and exhaust paths, but the design alone does not guarantee a particular cooling result; performance depends on the unit and its installation. Consumer Reports discusses these trade-offs in its portable AC effectiveness overview.
How often should you drain a portable AC?
There is no universal draining schedule. Some portable ACs evaporate accumulated water and send moisture out through the exhaust; other designs require the tank to be emptied or a drain connection to be used. Watch the unit’s indicator and follow the manual for the correct procedure. Consumer Reports’ older portable AC buying advice describes this variation, but the current manual for your model should govern operation.

How often should you clean the filter?
Follow the model manual to learn whether the filter is washable or replaceable and how to service it. Consumer Reports says cleaning or replacement may be needed as often as once a week during heavy use; treat that as guidance, not a universal schedule. Its air-conditioner buying guide also covers filter and maintenance advice. Match any replacement filter to the exact model.
What cooling performance to expect
Portable ACs can be useful when a window configuration or building rules prevent installation of a conventional window unit. They are often less effective and less energy-efficient than window models, and their mechanical components remain inside the room, contributing to noise. Consumer Reports’ article updated May 29, 2024, quotes its air-conditioner test overseer Chris Regan describing a portable unit as “an alternative, but not an ideal one.” (Consumer Reports.)
