Make a raised bed about 3 to 4 feet wide if you can reach it from both sides. If you can work it from only one side, keep it within your comfortable arm’s reach: Iowa State Extension recommends 1.5 to 2 feet, while University of Minnesota Extension allows up to 2.5 feet. The right limit is the farthest point you can tend without stepping into the bed.
Choose width by how you’ll reach the bed
A bed’s width should let you plant, weed, and harvest its center from the paths around it. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach puts the principle plainly: “Raised beds should be constructed so an individual can reach everything in the bed without stepping into it.” Stepping into the growing area can compact the soil, as NC State Extension notes.
| Access | Practical width guidance | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| One long side | 1.5–2 feet (Iowa State); up to 2.5 feet (Minnesota) | Use your comfortable reach as the maximum; recommendations differ, so don’t treat either figure as a universal rule. |
| Both long sides | 3–4 feet (Iowa State and NC State); 4 feet described as convenient (Delaware); up to 5 feet (Minnesota) | Start at 3–4 feet. Go wider only if you can comfortably reach the center from both sides. |
These are practical extension recommendations, not a single required standard. The retrieved pages do not state publication years. See Iowa State Extension’s raised-bed sizing guidance, University of Minnesota Extension’s raised-bed guidance, Delaware Cooperative Extension’s raised-bed guidance, and NC State Extension’s accessible gardening guidance.
How wide should a one-sided bed be?
For a bed against a wall, fence, or other obstruction, you can reach it from only one long side. Iowa State recommends 1.5 to 2 feet; Minnesota Extension gives a maximum of 2.5 feet. That difference is a reason to test your own reach, not to assume the wider measurement will work for everyone.

- Large capacity: Provide enough growth space for deep-rooted plants like potatoes, tomatoes, broccoli, etc. Tall enough to keep pets away from the garden planter and give you easy access!
- Stable and Solid Construction: Double card frames on the two sides of the sheet make the raised garden kits more durable and stable, and 4 reinforcing rods make the whole raised garden bed more stable. Never worry about its distortion or collapse and it presents a much more beautiful design.
- Open bottom: Sits on the ground garden bed, provide good drainage, keep weeds away from soil, defense against pests, and protect your plants. An open base design supports soil drainage, It is more conducive to the healthy growth of plants and balances soil moisture. Planter raised beds will be the best choice for your garden planting.
- Environment-Friendly: Built with an open bottom so it keeps the plants away from root rotting and water built up.
- Easy to assemble: We come with nuts, bolts, washers and instructions so that you can easily assemble without any experience.
Stand or sit where you’ll garden and reach to the far edge without leaning uncomfortably. Make the bed no deeper than that comfortable reach. If you have to stretch, twist, or step into the bed to tend its far edge, reduce the width or change the layout.
How wide should a bed be when you can reach both sides?
With paths on both long sides, a width of 3 to 4 feet is a sound starting point. Iowa State and NC State describe that range as typical or appropriate, and Delaware Extension calls four feet convenient because the center is reachable from either side. Minnesota allows widths up to 5 feet, but that should not be taken as a target: choose a wider bed only if you can tend its center comfortably from both edges.

How should wheelchair access affect the width?
Iowa State Extension reports about 30 inches of forward reach from a wheelchair without bending. Treat that as a planning reference rather than a universal bed-width rule: actual access depends on the gardener’s reach, posture, approach, and the height of the planter. Test the reach from the position the gardener will use, and size the bed so its growing area remains accessible without excessive leaning. Iowa State also notes that a wide ledge can support seated gardening. See Iowa State’s guidance on creating raised-bed planters.

Length is a separate choice: Iowa State says it depends on available space, preference, and convenience. Plan the paths for the equipment and people who will use them. Iowa State gives roughly 3 feet as a path that can suit equipment such as a wheelbarrow or cart, but the appropriate width varies with your equipment, mobility aids, and available space.
