Wood hardness is commonly measured with the Janka indentation test: a steel ball is pressed into a wood specimen until it is embedded halfway, and the force required is recorded. The result measures resistance to indentation under specified test conditions—not every kind of strength, wear, or durability.
How is wood hardness measured?
The Janka test measures the load needed to press a steel ball 0.222 in. (5.64 mm) into a specimen. That depth is half the ball’s diameter: 0.444 in. (11.28 mm). The USDA Forest Products Laboratory describes this procedure for clear solid wood in Research Note FPL-RN-0302; the USDA Forest Service gives the same defining dimensions in FPL-GTR-276.
For standard side hardness, the USDA technical account describes four indentations: two on the tangential face and two on the radial face. The reported result is the average force from those measurements. A value should therefore be read with its specimen, orientation, units, and averaging convention in mind.
What is the Janka hardness test?
Janka is an indentation-resistance test, not a general-purpose score for how a material performs in service. A higher result means more force was needed to reach the specified penetration in that test; it does not, by itself, establish resistance to scratching, abrasion, impact, or other forms of wear.

For small clear timber specimens, the relevant standard is ASTM D143-21, Standard Test Methods for Small Clear Specimens of Timber, which includes hardness among its test topics. For wood-based panels, ASTM lists hardness in D1037-12(2020). The accessible catalog pages describe scope and topics, not the complete procedures.
Is Janka hardness the same for solid wood and MDF?
No. The method must be interpreted in relation to the specimen class and applicable standard. D143 covers small clear timber specimens; D1037 covers wood-base panels, including particleboard, medium-density fiberboard (MDF), hardboard, and oriented strand board (OSB). Results from these different specimen classes should not be treated as directly interchangeable.

What does a Janka rating mean in construction?
A Janka result can help compare materials when they were tested on a comparable basis. It does not guarantee how a particular board, flooring product, or finished assembly will perform. Wood properties vary with factors including moisture, soil conditions, and growing space, as noted by the USDA Forest Service. The Forest Products Laboratory also cautions that some historical results—particularly for tropical species—may not have strictly followed ASTM procedures. See FPL-RP-643.
Species-table values are test results, not promises about every piece sold under a common species name. Conditions and procedure matter as much as the number when using a rating to inform a construction decision.

- Explanation: This rubber hardness tester is an instrument for measuring the hardness of sulfur-containing rubber and plastic products. Easy to use, accurate measurement, easy to carry, durable, stable, and practical
- Application: This shore type A durometer suitable for ordinary rubber, synthetic rubber, soft rubber, polyester, leather, wax, etc. Accurate readings, clear scales, and more intuitive and convenient degrees
- Alloy material: This hardness tester is made of high-quality alloy material, waterproof, non rusting, finely crafted, and durable
- Usage: Place the sample on a solid, take a hardness tester, and press the needle at a distance of at least 12mm from the edge of the sample. Smoothly put the foot pressure on the specimen, so that the pressure needle is pressed vertically into the specimen until the foot is in full contact with the specimen when the reading is in 1s. Measure the hardness values 5 times at different positions at least 6mm apart, and take the average value (at least 15mm for microporous materials)
- Contents of the Package: 1 durometer
How do you compare Janka ratings?
Before comparing two reported values, check that the records describe comparable tests. A useful comparison identifies:
- Specimen and method: clear solid wood tested under D143 or a panel tested under D1037.
- Conditioning: moisture state or other specimen conditioning, if reported.
- Orientation: whether the result is side or end hardness and which face was tested.
- Units and calculation: the force units and whether the reported figure is an average.
- Source and procedure: who reported the value and whether the test method is documented.
If those details differ or are missing, the figures may not support a like-for-like ranking. In particular, avoid combining panel and clear-wood results into a single comparison without stating their different methods and specimen classes.
