To unclog a central-vacuum hose, first remove it from the inlet and attachments, then try the reverse-suction method described in your system’s owner’s manual. For systems that support it, the MVAC manual directs you to connect the handle end of the hose to a suction inlet, cover the gap around the handle and engage the inlet contacts. If the hose clears but suction is still weak, check other inlets: the blockage may be in the built-in piping or power unit, not the hose.
Prepare the hose and check for visible debris
- Turn the system off before disconnecting the hose. Remove it from the inlet and detach any cleaning tools or other attachments. Because central-vacuum systems and powered hoses differ, use your owner’s manual for the appropriate controls and electrical precautions.
- Look into both hose ends and the attachments for debris you can remove without pushing it farther into the hose. Check for an obvious obstruction or kink.
- If the clog is not visible or easy to remove, do not force a rigid object into the hose. Move on to the manual’s clearing procedure.
Try reverse suction using your system’s manual
Some central-vacuum systems clear a hose by reversing the airflow. In its troubleshooting instructions, the MVAC owner’s manual says to plug the handle end of the hose into a suction inlet. It also directs users to cover the gap around the handle to provide adequate suction and to ensure the inlet contacts engage so the unit starts.
- Check your owner’s manual to confirm that reverse suction is suitable for your hose and inlet configuration.
- Following the manual’s instructions, connect the handle end of the hose to a suction inlet. Cover the gap around the handle as directed.
- If your hose or inlet uses electrical contacts, position them as the manual requires so the system starts. Do not assume the same connection method works for every model.
- Once the system is operating as directed, allow reverse airflow to work through the hose, then turn the system off and check whether suction has returned during normal use.
Consider a flexible hand snake only if needed
Manufacturer and retailer support guidance lists a plumber’s snake as an option for a stubborn clog in the removable hose. The guidance does not specify a universal snake design or size, so use only a flexible tool that suits your hose and work gently. Stop if it catches or requires force; forcing a tool can damage the hose. Do not use a snake to probe the built-in piping unless your system’s instructions or a qualified service provider advises it.
Check whether the problem is in the hose or the system
A hose clog is only one possible cause of weak suction. If the hose is clear but suction remains poor, compare suction at other inlets. If suction is weak at one or more inlets, the problem may be in the built-in pipework or power unit rather than the removable hose.

- Suction is restored with the hose: Reconnect it as directed by the manual and check that the hose and attachments are clear.
- The hose is clear, but one inlet has weak suction: The obstruction or fault may be in that inlet’s branch of the built-in piping.
- Several inlets have weak suction: The issue may involve the main piping or power unit. Repeating hose-clearing attempts is unlikely to address a system-level problem.
When to get service help
If suction remains weak after the hose is clear, or the symptoms point to built-in piping or the power unit, consult the owner’s manual or contact the system manufacturer’s technical support. Broan-NuTone’s central vacuum FAQ likewise directs users with persistent problems to the manual or technical support. A qualified central-vacuum service provider can investigate a suspected system-level blockage.
