To test an AC capacitor’s capacitance, use a multimeter with capacitance mode, first isolate the capacitor from the circuit and follow the equipment manufacturer’s discharge procedure. Measure it and compare the result with the capacitance value printed on the capacitor. A reading near that value indicates a good capacitor in the cited Daikin procedure; a significantly lower or absent reading indicates replacement. The procedure does not set a universal percentage tolerance.
Before testing: make the capacitor safe to handle
AC capacitors can retain an electrical charge after power is removed. The Daikin service manual instructs: “DISCHARGE CAPACITOR THROUGH A 20 TO 30 OHM RESISTOR BEFORE HANDLING.” That value is specific to that manual’s procedure, not a universal instruction for every unit. Another Daikin Comfort manual specifies a different resistor range, so use the service instructions for the actual equipment. If you cannot identify or safely follow the correct procedure, leave the work to a qualified HVAC technician.
Do not begin by touching the terminals or using a meter as a substitute for the equipment’s discharge procedure. The cited Daikin capacitance check also requires removing the capacitor from the circuit before measuring it.
What you need and what to check first
- A multimeter that has capacitance measurement mode. Not every multimeter has this function.
- The capacitor’s marked capacitance value, which is the reference for the measurement.
- The equipment service instructions for isolation and safe discharge.
The cited procedure supports choosing a meter by that capability; it does not establish a preferred brand or model.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
How to measure an AC capacitor’s capacitance
- Follow the unit’s service procedure. Isolate the equipment and discharge the capacitor as directed for that specific unit before handling it.
- Remove the capacitor from the circuit. The cited Daikin procedure calls for an out-of-circuit measurement.
- Set the multimeter to capacitance mode. Use the meter’s capacitance setting rather than resistance mode.
- Measure the capacitor. Connect the meter leads to the capacitor terminals as instructed by the meter manufacturer and wait for a stable reading.
- Compare the result with the capacitor marking. The Daikin procedure describes a reading near the marked value as good, and a significantly lower reading or no reading as grounds for replacement.
The cited instructions do not define how many percent below the marking counts as “significantly lower.” Do not treat an invented generic tolerance as a manufacturer specification; consult the unit’s service documentation or an HVAC professional if the result is borderline.
Why resistance mode is not the same test
An ohmmeter check can help identify an open or short condition under the older U.S. military maintenance procedure, but that procedure explicitly says resistance testing does not show how the capacitor behaves under load. It is therefore not interchangeable with the capacitance measurement described above, and a resistance reading alone does not establish that an AC capacitor is performing correctly in service.

- LEAD-ALERT PROTECTION: LEDs on the meter illuminate to indicate proper test lead placement, enhancing accuracy and safety during measurements
- BACKLIT DISPLAY: LCD shows clear readings in low-light conditions for enhanced visibility
- BATTERY TEST: Battery test mode can be used for checking if batteries are working
- CONVENIENT FEATURES: Test lead holders on the back of the meter, kickstand and optional magnetic hanger (Cat. Nos. 69445 or 69417) for hands-free operation
What to do if the reading indicates a problem
If the capacitance reading is significantly below the marked value or the meter gives no reading, replacement may be indicated under the cited procedure. Use the equipment and capacitor specifications to select a replacement; a generic capacitor rating is not a safe substitute for matching the required specifications. If the reading is uncertain, the capacitor cannot be safely isolated, or the unit’s service instructions are unavailable, have a qualified HVAC technician diagnose it.
