Not every indoor plant needs a stake. If a plant is leaning or flopping, a carefully placed stake can prop it up or give you something to tie it to; a trellis is an option when the plant’s growth climbs. The right support depends on the plant’s form and how much help it needs.
Choose a support for the way the plant grows
A stake is a rod pushed into the soil. It may stand beside a stem as a prop, or you can tie the stem loosely to it. A trellis offers a broader support for climbing growth. The University of Saskatchewan discusses indoor supports including stakes made from wood, plastic, or metal, and trellises made from mesh or netting; it does not identify one material as best for every houseplant. Its examples focus mainly on edible crops, so apply the basic support ideas to ornamental plants with care.

These are functional options, not rules for particular species. Use support only when the plant’s form or condition calls for it.
Place the support without harming roots
Set a stake near the plant, taking care not to damage roots as you push it into the soil. University of Maryland Extension gives this as general flowering-plant guidance; it does not specify a spacing measurement for indoor pots. Work carefully rather than forcing the stake through resistance. If you cannot place it without disturbing the plant, reconsider the support or its position.

Tie the stem loosely with a flexible material
If the plant needs to be attached, choose a soft, flexible tie that can be adjusted, such as soft string, Velcro, flagging tape, or a twist tie. Avoid fastening the stem tightly: it continues to grow, and a tie that initially seems loose can become restrictive.
- Secure one end of the tie to the stake.
- Bring the tie around the stem in a loose figure-eight, crossing the material between the stake and stem so the stem is not held directly against the stake.
- Leave enough room for the stem to move and grow without the tie pinching it.
Penn State Extension describes the method this way: “The string or twist tie is first tied tight around the stake and then the ends are tied in a loose figure-eight loop around the stem.” Its advice is for herbaceous plants in a flower garden; the technique is a practical starting point indoors, not a guarantee for every ornamental plant or pot.

Recheck ties as the plant grows
Look at the ties as the plant develops. Loosen or reposition any that begin to press into the stem, and add another loose tie only if the plant needs more support. Penn State Extension recommends adding ties as needed but does not set a fixed inspection schedule for houseplants, so check based on visible growth rather than a prescribed interval.
